I'll tell you what would outsell the new Scout rifle or the Tactical Mini 14...a tactical version of the .44 carbine. Anyone remember Col. Coopers "Thumper" idea? It would be my immediate truck rifle....

Make it with the ghost ring rear, scout type rail, a forend you could hang a light on, and make 10 and 20 round rotary magazines.

You forgot to make it black. Everyone knows for ANYTHING to be "tactical" it is required to be black.

As for the idea...well it was Cooper's idea years back and well, if there was enough market, it would've come already. The .44 mag carbine has come and gone and come and gone... It's a small market really. Too many want "bigger and badder".

His Scout rifle wasn't put into an affordable package until just now...I don't think the idea has come and gone, I think the time is right.

Also consider that the .44 magnum carbine was never quite presented properly. It was called things like "Deerfield" as in shooting a deer way out in the field....it isn't a long range deer rifle by any stretch. Marketed as a close in brush busting/tactical rifle, I think it would fly. Also consider Marlin has offered the .44 magnum carbine...succesfully...for years, and this years catalog shows a tactical version of that (pretty darned neat rifle, by the way).

I do agree though....it's a small niche of a market. I would buy one though.

ALSO CONSIDER....here in the Midwest there is a growing trend of areas that previously only allowed shotgun/handgun deer hunting, are allowing pistol cartridge carbines....widening that market a bit. I'm pretty sure thats why Ruger brought back the M77/44

"A "tactical" Marlin? Just looked at their site and a distributors offerings and see nothing "tactical" of Marlins .44's"

It's in the print 2011 catalog I picked up yesterday, I haven't checked the website.

Just to be clear...tactical to me is a 4" S&W Model 19....I just think it could be a sales winner.

folding stock , ghost ring rear sight fiber optic front , ten round detachable all in a zippered case behind the seat in my ranger. wish i could get my PC9 set up that way. remember bigger is only better IF its needed.

RNorris, that's an excellant suggestion and I hope Ruger listens! My Dad has an old .44 camp carbine and it's his favorite long gun. It's very handy and really packs a punch. He uses it for general duty on his ranch. If Ruger were to make an updated version of this great gun, I would buy one in a heartbeat.

about 7 years ago I saw a nice one in a pawn shop before I really knew much about them. I had the $400 but I didn't jump on it even though I liked the gun. still kicking myself. I see no practical purpose for it that isn't better filled by my ar15 or my ak47s or my M1 carbine. I still really want one, and a PC9 carbine.
