I traded for the upper in 6.8. Love it, it shoots great. The only problem is is a Spec chamber, wish it was in Spec II so I could shoot tacticle ammo. Also the twist is off. I'll keep it for pig hunting but thinking about building one with a 18 inch barrel.

anyone ever seen or heard of a SR556 with an ACE Skeleton stock. i was arguing the idea with some friends from work about it. i know a buffer, tube and spring change would be required. i'd prefer the rifle length skeleton not the entry. have any of you fired an AR with that stock on it. seems to me it would be pretty comfortable for the range as well as hunting on a cold morning. may shave a few ounces off the rifle too. any thoughts?

EDIT: i did a search both here and the inter-web but only thing i found was a single pic of a 6.8 for sale on a different forum with the entry stock, not the longer.

EDIT 2: well, since no one responded and i couldnt find any more pictures of a Ruger AR with the skeleton stock i went ahead and picked one up to try out. had to purchase an A2 buffer, buffer tube and spring but all together it was about $100 through midwayusa.com. going to the range tomorrow to try it out but already i like how solid it feels compared to the collapsible stock it replaced.

P.S. - that's my friend's Bushmaster Predator above my 556E. note the Adams Arms piston gas block and carbon fiber barrel.

Edit 3: went to the range yesterday and had a blast. this stock is solid and very comfortable. i did notice and increase in buffer spring noise but i guess that's to be expected considering the only thing covering the tube is a thin foam pad. i also tried my scope a little more forward on the receiver and like it better. before the skeleton stock my cheek would have rested on the buffer tube itself so this was not possible. also, with the new scope position the rifle feels more balanced which should be the other way around considering more weight has been placed forward. i will admit to liking the look of the Magpul ACS-L better than the skeleton stock but the feel of it makes up for the loss of "tacti-cool". i could not tell any real difference in accuracy but i am still using the stock trigger. with the fixed position stock the rifle still fit in my 40" Bulldog Hybrid case. i'm planning to get a lighter 3-9 or 4-12 power scope in a DNZ Freadom Reaper mount for hunting. will post weights after it's complete.

Buffer Modification

Sorry to be so long getting back. I had wear with the original set up. Not bad, but had read stories of the consequences of ignoring little things with regard to this wear pattern. When I put the PWS in place all evidence of wear stopped. IMHO this is a great rifle. I have a Colt LE 6920 for my wife, and a Red Jacket. I like them all. I have experienced no difficulties with any of them, except this buffer issue. I bought the 556 pre-owned, and with it's cost and the modifications, I am still way under suggested retail.

I would trust my life to any one of them, however, if I had to bug, and could only grab one and go - the 556 would be the first choice. This firearm is way under rated. This rifle is like the San Antonio Spurs. Every year everyone blows them off - but when it comes playoff time, that's who you have to beat. The 556 is just like that.

Yes, I got the Bravo Company part - I love it, because I have large hands anyway, and it really makes a difference for me.

Updated pic. Sorry for the crappy cell phone version. Lower gun is an M&P 15-22.

Well I got my SR556FB today...

And with the Magpul ACS-L installed...

Quick question for you guys? When did Ruger start using the Samson sights instead of the Troy? Mine came with the Samson sights.

I picked up my SR556-CLA yesterday. It too has Samson sights, and I wondered the same thing. Ruger's website no longer advertises the use of Troy Industries sights (nor does it advertise that they use Samson sights), and the picture of the gun on their website has been updated to show Samson sights.

Does anyone have an opinion one way or the other regarding Samson v. Troy? Are they the exact same?

Also, do your sights lock in the "up" position? Mine go up and down freely (there is very slight tension holding them in the upright position that must be overcome to get them to fold down, but they don't lock), making me wonder what purpose the "Push" button on the left side of each sight serves? The Instruction Manual suggests the push button is required to fold the sights down, but I believe the sights pictured in the Manual are the Troy Industries sights (I'm not certain, but they look different than mine).

I have only had mine for a couple of months now, but it did come with the Troy sights. Yes, they do 'lock' in place when upright and you do have to push the button for it to release. No knowledge on comparison of the two brands however to help you there. Enjoy the gun but warning, she must be fed often...

My Samson sights do lock in the up position. I've only put 5 rounds though mine so far... The weather hasn't been the best for shooting. I did get my magpul AFG2 the other day, and got it installed...

Glad I went Ruger

I just stumbled across this forum earlier today - and after combing through all 18 pages Im glad I did.

I picked my 556 up about a month ago...I was in the market for a Semi-Auto and figured I had better get my hands on one before they couldnt be purchased anymore, and Im glad I did.

I realize the thread has been around for a while - but here's a quick Thanks to everyone who as already contributed!

Now its time to go back and re-read all of the mods...I need some good ideas!!!

Check the 68forums, you can have the chamber reamed to the SPC II.

Ive poked around the Forums in search for a bipod...it seems like most are a fan of the Harris'...wondering if anyone has any experience with the VLTOR Sidemounts (http://www.vltor.com/modpod.htm)?

Seems like the biggest drawback is the lack of swivel, despite the clean line look and ability to fold em forward or backward.

Is this the magpul ubr stock with the doors removed ? I love that look. Trying to find it having a hard time.

Nevermind I found it.
Is everyone hunkered down waiting for the mayan's to attack?

I am also thinking about upgrading the buttstock (Magpul CTR), the trigger (Geissele), and adding an optic down the line.

I have only fired it at a 25 yard indoor range nearby and haven't had the time to go outdoors and really see what it's capable of. So far I am impressed and probably won't touch my Mini 14 for a while. Nothing against my super reliable Mini, but I prefer the pistol grip, collapsible stock, overall versatility, and superior accuracy of the SR. The Troy sights are a huge improvement over anything else I have used to this point. Just another happy SR-556 owner!

I may never get an answer but how did you mount the covers directly ? I want to do this as well and what size did you buy?
