My Mini 14 twist rate

OK so I know that I have a 186-91XX. I from what I could find It was made in 1999. How do I tell what twist rate I have for my barrel. Any help would be great.

You can do a Google search on Mini 14 twist rates and there will be plenty of links to finding out which twist rate by year of manufacture or by serial number. Yours is 1 in 9".

GMinor is an unknown quantity at this point
Keep in mind that twist rate is not all that it boils down to.
A bullet traveling down a 1:9 barrel at 2000fps = 160,000rpm
1:9 @ 3000fps = 240,000 rpm, 1:9 @ 4000fps = 320,000.

So if you are asking your twist rate so you could figure out whether or not your rifle will stabilize x bullet then you have a little more research to do. Basically, call the bullet manufacture and ask them what rpm your bullet needs to spin at to be stable out to whatever distance. And then do the math. Formula provided below.

Bullet rpm= (12/twist rate in inches X MV)(60)

Run a cleaning rod with a patch on it to make a tight fit down the muzzle measuring the distance it takes to make one revolution of the rod, then you'll know for sure. I put a piece of tape up near the handle with a mark. I found all the serial numbers to be confusing as they do not appear to be sequential.

You can also phone Ruger customer support and they can tell you ... but ... I've read where many folks aren't too happy with their level of support when it comes to the Mini's.

Here's a link to the ruger site:

Standard/Military rear sight Mini 14 1978 - 2004

Ranch model Mini 14 1982 - 2004

Hope this helps,

Ralph.
