chinesse sks pre ban

i know this is a ruger auto forum but i have a mini 14 and a sr556 so here i go. I just traded for a sks chinnese all matching numbers pre clinton band wood stock and 12 stripper clips shoots great. i was currious about range and accuracy wanting it for coyotes for a 12 year old did not know if it would be more accurate than my mini i let him use. my mini is a 197 model spegati barrel. any thoughts. the sks is light all wood with a spike bayonete that can be used as a shooting pod awsome would like to put a small scope on it but am i waisting my time or just let it throw the lead

Not many good scope set-ups for an SKS. You can get a scout scope mount, but the receiver cover mounts just don't hold zero. Tech sights work well for me, they mount a peep on the rear of the receiver so that you have a much longer sight radius.

I have one that I bought new before the ban with a chrome lined barrel. I traded a garand bayonette for a military scope that's made for it (Russian I believe) but it was new. The problem with the setup is that as the shells eject, they ding the bottom of the scope. All in all that's not a bad thing unless you don't like your scope with a bunch of shell dings. I purchased another receiver cover so all I have to do to mount and dismount the scope is pull it. Only takes a minute or two and you don't mess up the original.

If you re-read my post it says SEVERAL hundred yards NOT 700 yards. I'm good, but I wasn't that good with the SKS.

Rifleman...not trying to "ruffle your feathers"....i guess theres maybe a difference in each of our interpretation of "several" ,here in NZ we associate several to maybe around 6-8 ...whereas you obviously equate it to a lot less.
for example heres a yahoo definition on several hours.

here's a general guide

a couple of hours = 2 hrs
a few hours = 3 or 4 hrs
several hours = 5 to 11hrs
half a day = 12 hrs

So its apparent we both have quite different interpretations of "several" probably stemming from coming from different parts of the world, but none the less that shot on that coyote with your SKS sounds like a great bit of marksmanship.

I took a couple (2) coyotes from several hundred yards (~300) with the SKS on iron sites. But that's normally the rifle range I target practice from with a CAR-15 (.223) and can hit 27 of 30 on a head and shoulder target.

The coyotes in question were trying to coax my neighbor's golden retriever away.. most likely to kill him..
Broad daylight, level field.

You didn't ruffle my feathers. I just bolded and italisied my original words to bring to your attention what I actually wrote. I didn't even think that several would have a more than one meaning. My bad but here is Websters Dictionary definition. Bold text is from me. Anyway at the time I didn't have my laser rangefinder so I estimated the range and it was just as Websters definition.

I have a collection of SKSs. Just set it on the U setting. This is for battle range and you can pop tin cans all day from 100 to 300 yds.

It really doesnt work well with a scope mount on the cover. To much receiver cover movement.
