Alledgedly, there is an updated carrier design that doesn't necessarily eliminate the problem, but reduces the severity. I was hoping mine was late enough that it was made with the updated carrier assembly. Unfortunately, for me, no such luck. Looks like mine has an original design. So I thought I'd ask a stupid question here first before calling Ruger and asking them... Should I try and buy the updated carrier before using this weapon? Maybe Ruger would be willing to send me one for free (I doubt it since no problem has occurred yet) or if they would even sell me one? If I do get a replacement; is it a remove old/ drop in new or is it more complicated then that (polishing, grinding, etc...)? Any knowledge, opinions or suggestions very much appreciated.
I own two SR-556's. The first, a 556-E was purchased summer of 2011 and has a very smooth buffer tube. More than 2000 rounds have been fired through that one and never an issue with carrier tilt. My second SR was the 556-VT purchased early 2015. It has a fixed A2 stock and for what ever reason came with a very rough buffer and buffer tube. After a few hundred rounds I noticed the dreaded tilt issue starting to form. But rather than get Ruger involved I decided to upgrade the entire receiver extension system. And it wasn't that costly either. I purchased a Stoner buffer and tube through Midwayusa and used the stock spring. But as I said, that was only after it was fired many times over 2 years and started showing signs of an issue. Your rifle being new should not have a problem, if any, until some time down the road.
