.22 LR conversion for SR-556?

I'm looking to purchase a .22 LR conversion bolt & magazine for the SR-556. I have seen a few kits around that require just a modified bolt and a magazine to house .22 LR's. They run about $200 and are general for any AR but I don't know if they will work with a piston carbine. Can anyone confirm this? Anyone tried a kit with the 556 rifle?

Thanks.

I have not tried the kit and have thought of it too, but I think what I'm going to do and I believe is wiser is to buy a dedicated .22 AR. A S&W M&P 15 .22 runs a little over $400 and probably less in the right circles and the colt several hundred more. So for twice your money you get a another rifle, plus they are more accurate than the conversions due to not using a bullet sleeve in the bolt. Plus you can tailor it just for its purpose rather that messing with your AR. I know some really like the Ruger SR 22, but to me its just a 10-22 in a different skin. I wouldn't have one. I already have or my wife does a 10-22. Just my 3 cents.

Thanks for both replies. The kit is a good $200 and may not work with a piston gun. A basic Ruger 10/22 at my local store is $285! I'll just pick up one of those. It's guaranteed, more accurate, and another firearm for little more. Throw on a $50-100 scope and I'm set. I would much prefer a 5 cent bullet to a 40 cent bullet for plinking.

Wouldn't a .22 upper for a AR-15 work, or are they incompatible with the Ruger SR-556 maybe? At least then you could have the same overall feel, trigger pull, ect.

If I understand correctly, the .22 conversions don't use the gas system so I don't see why they wouldn't work with a piston gun the same way as they do with a regular AR. The only concern I have ever had with them is the possibility of the gas port getting plugged with lead from the lead bullet. Has anyone ever had a problem with that?

The new CMMG bravo .22lr conversion bolt work with the sr556. I picked one up a month ago and it has worked flawlessly. They're pricey, but the stainless steel carrier is easy to clean.
