If he has been using only Wolf Gold ammo 'from the beginning', it wouldn't hurt to try some better quality ammo and see how the rifle performs.

Yea....you're right- it will not hurt to try different ammo but if the OP tries different ammo and has the same problems, that tactic will not help either.

So, the OP can spend money on another type of ammo and see if that corrects the problem. If it does, great; he's identified the problem. However, if it doesn't correct the problem; all he's done is delay the inevitable and wasted time.

Personally, I think the damn rifle should function with commercial, SAAMI spec, brass cased ammunition of the proper type regardless of the brand. It should at least function with: Wolf Gold, Remington, Federal, PMC or any other SAAMI spec ammo and if it doesn't, Ruger should make it right.

It's his call but it sounds to me like he's got a lemon. He can fix it or he can get Ruger to fix it. I'd stop playing around and get Ruger to fix it.

I had the same problems and on the 2nd time back to ruger I asked for a new mini14 which they did. The replacement mini14 had the same issues so I asked for a different gun and they sent me a SR556 which has been flawless and a joy to shoot.

I still have a love for the mini and will get another one when money allows.

All brass cased ammo should work, period. Granted some brands are better than others but they should all work

From the beginning, it has jammed periodically -- usually a stove pipe where the round does not fully eject. Today at the range, after firing, the empty shell casing did not eject and is currently still in the barrel. I cannot retract the bolt at all.

I searched for some solutions elsewhere but found no answers. I have contacted Ruger customer service and my guess is they will want me to send the gun to them. In the meantime, does any one have suggestions on how to remove the spent casing?

Thanks in advance.

Cheers

I know this is not everyone's solution but I like to take a bore snake with me on my range trips and at the first sign of a stoppage I run the bore snake through the barrel and eliminate a carbon build up as a possible explanation as to why I had a stoppage. I do this with my AR's as well as my Mini's. After running a bore snake thought the barrel after a stoppage then I know my problem lies somewhere else.

I know Tula gold is brass and not steel but anything with the word Tula in it would cause me to rethink what I am shooting. Winchester white box would be the cheapest ammo I would use in any rifle if I were buying commercial ammo. GI ball would be preferred.

I have reloaded my own ammo for years and have my own recipes for success but I came to this after some trial and error.

UPDATE. Went to the range and tried some Federal American Eagle ammo and had similar issues. Now, after the bullet is fired, the base of the empty casing gets stuck at the front of the bolt, requiring me to remove it by hand.

Its on its way back to Ruger. I'll keep you posted as to what the outcome is.

Thanks for all the info. I should stick to CZ's -- never a problem with those.

It's acting like there's no ejector in the rifle, or the bolt is dragging heavily. It will be interesting to see what Ruger finds with it. My new 583 series was acting somewhat similar to that when I first shot it. The bolt was short-stroking periodically.

Km, reserve your judgment until Ruger returns your rifle. CZs may be nice, but you'll never have more fun with your clothes on than with a Mini.

Be patient, and keep us posted.

UPDATE
I received the gun back from Ruger very quickly. This is the note they wrote on the return invoice:
"Installed new bolt stop, safety lever, adjusted trigger guard, bolt fit."

I will try it in the next week or so and report on results.

Cheers

UPDATE 2
Range time today. I had 1 stove pipe malfunction in the first magazine and then no problems over about 100 rounds. Ruger apparently fixed the problem.

New bolt stop. Aka: ejector. They may have better fitted the bolt to the receiver, reducing friction.

Hopefully you have no more issues with it.

I got the same problem with my new 583 series. Sending it to Ruger tomorrow, hopefully this wasn't a bad batch that was manufactured.
