Lightbulb 556 AR Accessories

Hey all,

I am a NOOB I know ...but I wanted to ask for opinions on accessories that work best for the Ruger 556 AR. I am not a new gun owner, but I have mainly bought hunting rifles and when I purchased this rifle I knew I wanted to customize it, and make it my own. Basically have fun in the transformation from stock. This is my project gun. I am new to the AR platform and look forward to hearing and seeing all of your favorite additions. The good the bad and the ugly. My AR shows up tomorrow and I cant wait to start the art project. Pics are very welcome, Suggestions, and lessons learned too. Thanks!

(I have searched through the forum at many accessories but thought I would try to revamp and start a new thread for all parts, pieces, and stories

I would suggest a sling. I have mounts on my AR's for single point mount or traditional so I can have ready or across back or on shoulder. In traditional mount you can also use as a brace to steady your shots.

Personally I like the Magpul MS4 Dual Sling GEN2. It is crazy adjustable and quick to change from single point to traditional 2 point.

That is great. I will look at the Magpul sling. I am looking at them for the furniture. I held a lot of ARs at this years SHOT SHOW in Las Vegas, and I remembered the comfort of Magpul and their good prices.

Thanks

Best accessory is ammo.
Followed by more ammo.

Don't be that guy that straps mall ninja bs all over his AR just because. Shoot the hell out of the thing and get familiar with it. Then decide what role it is going to play. Then adjust accordingly.

Only thing i added to mine was the Magpul hand guards and front vertical fore grip. And like everybody else said, buy ammo and have fun shooting it!

- Magpul- B.A.D. Lever

Many people don't like the stock trigger and will most likely recommend replacing that first. Me? My trigger is great. I would recommend replacing the hand guard. I used the A*B Arms A*B Pro Hand Guard.

I replaced the stock hand guard with the Magpul version (P.N. MAG424-BLK). This is a direct replacement that installs quite easily.

I like the look and feel of the Magpul version much better than the stock unit. The Magpul's also come with an integrated heat shield on the lower section. The stock units do not have a heat shield.

Well, the possibilities are endless.

I would start with some extra magazines, if you don't already have them. Many find that a 20 round or even a 10 round magazine is more comfortable to use shooting from rest or shooting prone.

A single point sling mount attachment is an easy modification. You can either get one that replaces the receiver end plate, or fits onto the receiver extension tube (recoil buffer tube) just behind the end plate.

A decent red dot sight is certainly a desirable addition for many. It probably makes more sense to invest your dollars here than on other modifications that might be more cosmetic than functional, unless you plan to just shoot with the "iron" sights.

I chose to replace the stock furniture with a Magpul MOE set in flat, dark earth. The MOE fore-end is more comfortable than the stock one and allows attachment of M-LOK accessories. I attached an M-LOK angled fore-grip which I find places my weak hand wrist in a more natural position. I also chose to replace the Ruger flip-up, single aperture rear sight with a Magpul MBUS dual aperture flip up rear sight.

I added a quick release rear sling attachment point to my Magpul butt stock. I have also replaced the trigger group with a relatively inexpensive AR Stoner group. A Seekins Precision enhanced bolt catch makes it a bit easier to capture the bolt carrier back without an empty magazine in the receiver, and easier to release the bolt on a loaded mag.

I swapped out the stock charging handle for a BCM VLTOR which just has a much better feel.

Does anyone make a cup holder for the AR 15?

I guess I need to disqualify myself.
I don't have an AR556.
Both my AR's are 80% builds and thus 100% accessory.
