I added the MagPul hand guard so I could mount a red dot at 2 o'clock, and changed the stock to an A2 solid stock. Every time I would shoulder, then lower the rifle, one of my facial hairs would get pulled. It would get between the receiver tube, and front of the stock where it meets the tube. I know it sounds trivial, but it was very distracting. No one else shoots my carbine, so I don't need to adjust the length of pull.

I also replaced the trigger with a Timney Competition with a 3 lb pull, and a straight blade.

Aqualung will become famous soon enough
This is the latest configuration of mine:

Magpul CTR stock
UTG clamp-on sling swivel
Cabela's Patrol Sling
Troy Industries ambidextrous bolt release
UTG milspec carry handle/sight
GI or replica 3-prong flash hider
JPI yellow hammer and trigger springs
Trigger adjustment screw
Magpul mags
Hogue Handall Tactical Sleeve slip-on grip

Prior to this, it was in its FDE phase:

Magpul SL stock, grip and forearm
Monstron carry handle/sight

For some reason, the FDE look didn't appeal to me like I thought it would on it. I did put the stock and grip on my .300 Blackout build.

Prior to that, it had a scope mounted, which also ended up on the Blackout.

Point is, the possibilities are as varied as your imagination.

As others said, try yours out for a while and think about what you want to use it for. Then, accessorize to fit the mission.

Enjoy customizing it.

Magpul MOE SL Stock
Magpul MOE M-LOK Hand Guard
Magpul M-LOK Vertical Grip
Vortex Strikefire II Red Dot
Magpul Gen 3 Magazines

Just add different products over time. The first thing I changed was the hand guard. I liked the Magpul with the metal heat shield inside.

Mine doesn't really resemble the AR556 anymore. Still has the Ruger lower so technically it still is.

My only mod so far is a MagPul hand guard and a Vortex Sparc II red dot. Pic to follow.

I'm guilty of what this guy is saying...

I have 2 stripped lowers, and I will be building my own from here on out. It's too easy to do, and you end up with exactly what you want. You can still build a great Ar for a lot less than what he's saying if you don't splurge on the top of the line components. You can build exactly what you want with quality parts for $600 or so. Shop the sales and you can find some real bargains.

Low expectations? JK

Most AR's will work. If they are not, then it's usually gas related. You can change out quite a bit to improve your shooting experience.
