Mini 14 and Mini 30 Peep Sights

Hi to all. New guy here.

I seem to remember a few years ago reading about the peep sights on some Minis having a figure eight shaped hole in them.
It may have been an optical problem, I'm not sure. I know for sure that I checked both at that time and both peeps were round.
Due to eye surgeries and back surgeries, I haven't been able to shoot much over the last few years. I still clean my guns every few months whether I have shot them or not. I was wiping down my Minis and I looked down the peep sights and lo and behold, figure eight in both my Mini 14 and Mini 30.
I used to shoot the dickens out of both and I don't remember such a thing or I would have taken care of it then and there!!
Is it my eyes or am I going whako?? Well, my wife tells me I have been the latter for quite a while!! But, what the heck does she know???

Mini 14 is a 184 series, circa 1985. Bought used in late 90's.

Mini 30 is a 189 series, circa 1989. Bought new in early 90's.

Any help is appreciated!!!

You might have aftermarket sights on both.

06: First of all. welcome to the forum from Central Virginia!

No idea about a figure-8 rear peep. Like bwinters said, might be after-market, although the Mini-30, since you bought it new, doesn't fit into that category.

Should you choose to replace them, Tech Sights makes a very nice rear sight, for about $70. I love my all-original 181's rear sight, but one look through the newer 583's and I ordered the Tech Sights rear sight. Never looked back!

Thanks

I appreciate your reply.

Maybe my eyes are the problem.

I'm old school. Don't care much for telescopic sights.

Had a 1-4 Bushnell on the Mini 30 for a few years. It worked fine. Just don't like them. Took it off.

Thanks again for your reply!!

06: hope you like them; I certainly did!

Depending on astigmatism, you may also want to consider a red-dot, like the TRS-25. Mine look lousy without my eyeglasses, but are great with them. But for the newer Minis, the Tech Sights are the best if you're an "irons" kinda guy!

I found the best price was directly from the site, rather than aftermarket sellers. YMMV. Easy replacement, but I would recommend blue loctite on the mounting screws.

Never heard of "figure eights", maybe something unique to your eyes.
I'm not sure if I have astigmatism, but can't focus clearly anymore unless the object is at least 3 or 4 feet away from me.
Seeing the front sight clearly was becoming a problem, and I wasn't enjoying shooting irons as much anymore.
I now get the optional .040" aperture that Tech sells. it gives the effect of increasing your depth of field, so now my front sight is much sharper.
Like RJF said, some red dot sights are not so friendly to older eyes.
I can't shoot EoTechs anymore, the dot is way too fuzzy.
I have no problem with Burris FastFires, Trijicons or the TRS-25.

Aughtsix, this is what the Bushnell TRS-25 looks like on my mini-30. Small compact and works great for close up to 100-150 yard shots
