Safety won't Engage on Mini-14 when round is chambered?

Hi, I hope this isn't a stupid question, but I have noticed that the safety on my Mini-14 will not engage while a round is chambered. For example, if I engage the safety and load a magazine & charge the rifle, the safety will remain on. But if I decide I want to take a break 5 rounds into a 10 round magazine, the safety will not engage with a round chambered. I have to open the bolt, eject the chambered round, then engage the safety.

Seems like you should be able to engage the safety at any time. Is my rifle functioning correctly or is there a problem with my safety?

Thanks

No that's not normal, the only time the safety shouldn't engage is if the hammer isn't cocked. There are better experts on the mini here than I but I'd probably contact ruger.

Silkie, first, Welcome to the forum from Central Virginia!

The safety should engage any time the hammer is cocked. If yours doesn't, that is not normal.

Not a stupid question at all, but rather a very important question. It would be stupid not to ask the question!

Make sure your trigger group is properly latched into the receiver: some folks experience it not fully latching in. When assembling, it takes a smart smack to get it fully latched. Don't worry, you won't hurt the rifle (you might bruise your palm, though...). Assemble it with the hammer cocked. It gets better over time.

Others will undoubtedly chime in.

Need to look at a schematic and see if you see anything "wrong."

Thanks I thought it seemed a little strange. I'm actually going to have some work done on the trigger in a couple months, but in the meantime I'll pop it out and see if there's something obviously wrong with it.

Is it a new gun? I have seen them stiff on a new gun and pulling, cleaning and lubing trigger group normally does the trick.

Yes it is only a few months old, but its had at least 1000 rounds put through it. I should just pop it out and inspect it

NOT normal.....disassemble, re install read the instructions carefully in the manual. If that does not work...call ruger customer service....I had to send my mini 14 back to service for multiple problems after fighting with it for a year. Glad i did, they fixed up and it had been trouble free for 4 years now.
