Mini-14 Makeover

I've had this Mini-14 since the mid 80's and decided to do a few up grades. New scope Nikon 223, stock butt pad because I got tired of the stock slipping on my shoulder and the Accu-Strut.[IMG][IMG][IMG][/IMG]

I have a 188 series Mini-14 Ranch Rifle. My wood stock has very nice grained wood. But I think that the Mini-14 has birch wood. I also don't care for the plastic butt plate. Often thought about finding a metal butt plate. My Mini-14 make over started with a factory Ruger Composite stock. I find the factory composite stock has a nicer formed pistol grip plus a rubber recoil pad. I also install a barrel strut. My scope I fiddled around from a 3-9 Nikon BDC to a 2-7 Burris. I came across a older Redfield Widefield 2-7x32 made in Denver that is now on my Mini-14. I really love the wider field of view & the way my Mini-14 now comes to my shoulder. The changes that I have made makes this rifle more enjoyable for my use. I also much prefer using 10 round magazines vs 20 & 30 round mags. With 10 round mags it's much nicer to carry the rifle using a sling.

Hellgate I haven't shot it since I put the strut on it. We're having really bad weather this year in the northwest. I was just glad the garage got up to 46 degrees so I could work on the 14. I'll get out soon with some handloads and see how it does.

Good move on the accustrut. The older mini-14's were notorious for barrel whip.

Most.

My 181GB doesn't whip much at all. The GB part helps (flash hider and bayo lug). Probably not intentional on the part of Ruger, but those two items seem to attenuate the whip. 2-4 MOA if I do my part, which is fine for my intended purposes.

That's a good point. Firearms are amazing feats of engineering, but there's always a chance that one instance of an otherwise problematic model will shoot perfectly! Count yourself lucky.
