AR 556 not holding mag

I bought my first AR today. So I'm pretty new at this. I work in a gun store but don't have hands on much as I am in accounting. I brought my firearm home and started getting familiar with it. When I inserted the mag, the "catch" wasn't happening. I can slide the mag out without pressing the release. After reading some forum posts, I separated the upper and lower and tried again. It worked. But when we put the upper back down, same thing, no catch. Anyone have any suggestions before I have to call ruger? Thanks in advance!

Lock the bolt to the rear and try inserting the magazine.

Is it a factory mag? Are you giving the base of the magazine a solid smack to seat it home? Pull the charging handle to the rear and lock the bolt back with the bolt release. If a factory mag won't lock in easily it will be time to call Ruger.

Need to know which mags too. I can confirm that Magpul G2 and M3 mags don't have this issue. MFT mags don't have this issue. And Okay Surefeed mags don't have this issue, closed bolt or not.

I was going to suggest trying Magpul mags and reporting back on results.
