Easy Question: What sling mounts do i buy for AR556 ?

Hey guys.

Im sure yall pretty tired of hearing all these AR questions, but after looking for awhile about getting a sling attached to my rifle im left with more questions than answers.

There are about a dozen different types of sling mounts out there and im not sure which one will fit my rifle.

Can someone give me a direct answer on what type of mount I need?

All I want to do is be able to throw my rifle over my shoulder in the woods.

Use an old belt or piece of rope if all you want is a functional carry sling.

I don't see how anyone can give you a direct answer without knowing the design details of your gun, there are too many out there today.

However if you have an older style (M16 style) an M1 clone sling works, about $10-$15 online.

I believe you can attach a quick attach (QA) sling mount to the bottom of the front sight and use the existing mount for the rear, that is what I plan on doing to mine.

Sabbfan has the cheapest option. You can make your own inexpensive sling out of nylon or polyester webbing and some nylon Fastex quick release connectors. You need one quick release sling attachment that will fit into the socket at the base of your front sight post.

There are two point and one point slings. I think the two point slings are more comfortable and allow the carbine to be slung over the back of your shoulder. Some people prefer one point slings. To use one of those, you will need to replace the end plate of your receiver with one that allows the sling to be attached. There are many different versions. Here is an example:

I got the Ruger Sling swivels.

It really depends on the type of setup you are looking for.

That's what I did. Works fine.

The AR 556 has a sling attachment point on the butt stock but it is not quick release. If you want to be able to quickly and easily detach and reattach a two point sling, you can make a sling out of webbing and appropriately sized nylon Fastex quick release side buckles.

Alternatively, you can remove the screwed on sling attachment point on the butt stock, and add a quick release socket to the stock. If you choose to replace the stock, you will likely need to add such an adapter, although many stocks have slots that allow sling webbing to be run through them, as long as you don't need to quickly remove the sling.
