If the Mini is your only firearm for defensive purposes , try to get see - thru mounts for the scope so you can still use the irons , or the factory mounts and shoot from the hip.
Maybe a red dot or laser ?? The BG probably won't be 100 yards out , but more likely in arms reach so maybe just beat em' down with the rifle. If it was my only weapon I would have a scope mounted, JMO.

I think an optical scope would be of little use in tactical defense of a home or business, and might even get in the way. The iron sights are as good as anything out to 50 yards. If you have to use it under stress indoors, you wouldn't take the time to "aim" it anyway, you'd just "point" it.

Depends whether we're talking defensive or tactical.

As the previous guy mentioned, for true defensive work, it'll be less than 50 feet, no special sights needed.

"Tactical - combat", ranch use, predation control, all would benefit from a low power scope.

As a follow up, if I stay with iron sights are the fold up sights tha come on the older ranch riflss any more prone to breakage tha xs, williams or m-1 carbine sights milled for a mini 14?

I have a red dot on one of mine and it serves my purposes just fine.

Eotech on some sort of QR mount is a battle-proven design. I know nothing about the Mini 14 but have one on my Colt AR-15 and it works very well.

For short range defense which you would encouter in and around your home, iron sights only, for aa scope if i thought i would need one for the out of doors it would be a low powered scope.

As others have said, the iron sights out to 50 yards would be fine. I have mounted a scope on mine, which gives me a bit of an edge at 100 yards.
