SR556 Owner

Last December I took delivery on a new Ruger SR556 (5924). This was my first AR pattern rifle. I had used AR rifles during my time in the service but those military commanders tended to frown upon modifying an issue weapon.

The SR556 introduced me to the world of the AR. Seeing all the makers, parts, accessories and models out there was a real eye opener for me.

Of course I accessorized, tweaked and upgraded the rifle with a few parts:

1. Vortex Crossfire II 3-9x40 optic
2. Team Warne scope mount
3. Brownells riser
4. MagPul angled forward grip
5. MagPul hand guard grip blanks
6. Harris bipod on a cantilevered picatinny rail section
7. Tango Down QD rear sling mount
8. MagPul MS3 QD sling

Looks like I need a few more posts before I can post up some pics so I'll work on that.

Thanks! I like the combination too. Can't believe what a great deal the Vortex optics are.

Welcome from Massachusetts.

I've two SR556's. My first one is an SC (State compliant) and the second one is a VT (varmint) with a 20" barrel. Love them both especially the VT.

So far the VT is good you to 200 yards with silver dollar sized groups. That's doing something for old hands and eyes.

Vortex glass helps quite a bit too!

Looks like you enjoy finding accessories. I like your rifle with exception to that riser... Looks high!

I have high cheekbones so sight acquisition is a problem unless I raise up the scope.

It's interesting that Ruger went back to a Magpul grip, but didn't go with a Magpul stock. I ditched the wobbly stock right away with a Magpul CTR and am very happy with it. My SR-556 is an older model with the Troy quad rail, but it's nice to know there are hand guard options if I decide to swap it out later.

Welcome to the forum. This is why they call ARs Barbie for men.

That is a Magpul stock. I don't think you can install that hand guard on a standard SR-556. His appears to be the Take-Down model. I also doubt Ruger would sell you one. I'm pretty sure they don't want you tampering with the op-rod and spring.

It's cool- I'm very happy with my purchase and the quad rail. I looked at the take down version too, but I didn't see myself going with 300AAC, and saved about $400-600 buying this SR-556.
