I am new here and have very little knowledge of ar's. I was reading alot of posts here and their about the sr-556. This is the gun I think i want. Their is something that is starting to bug me. On the HK PRO furom they were talking about the sr out selling the mr, but one of the members brought up that the sr has a significant "carrier tilt issue" but that it would be corrected. They on ar.com i saw pictures posted about this same issue with a sr. Could someone please enlighten me about this. Thanks
I won't know until I fire a few hundred rounds through mine, but I'll let everyone know if I have problems.
There seems to be a fix... A buffer tube that extends out a little on the bottom, so that the rear of the BCG is contacting the tube before the action starts.
Indeed woods warrior. Carrier tilt is when the lower rear area of the bolt carrier rubs the surface of the buffer tube to the point of abrasion. No big deal for the most part as most all AR's do it to some degree, nature of the design. In most cases it's a self righting problem in that it wears only to a certain point however, in some cases{rare} the buffer tube can wear pretty thin. This is certainly more pronounced on piston driven guns as the op rod slaps the carrier pretty solidly at the top sending the carrier back at a slight tilt, thus the phrase "carrier tilt". Should you ever have this problem and not want to send your rifle back it is one of the easiest fixes there is. Simply take your carrier to any decent gunsmith to have the rear circumferrence slightly beveled and Voila'
Problem solved. You can do it yourself if you're handy at that sort of thing, just a VERY slight bevel is all that's required.
after two hundred rounds, I can see slight marking on the lower edge of the buffer tube. nothing to worry about yet.... still need to fire a few hundred more rounds.
yeah, I saw those pictures... doesn't look too serious. but my rifle looks nothing like that, only slightly marked where the carrier contacts the tube.
Woods Warrior, I visit that sight regularly and saw the pics when posted, trust me, if thats his problem,he has no problem. Typical for most AR's.
Enjoy your rifle.
