He blamed it on the ammo he was using which he said was PMC bronze, that was the same ammo I was using along with Tulammo steel case.
I asked him if I could try some of his ammo in my AR to see if it was a ammo issue he said no and stated that mine wouldn't shoot it either since my AR was a built rifle, okay well mine performed flawlessly and his didn't.
Not sure what but I have seen this also with other AR556 rifles at my range. I guess QC went way south. I was thinking about purchasing one of these but instead build my own, kinda glad I just stuck with the Ruger pistols SR9 and SR45, love them both, shoot really well.

LOL, this story makes me laugh. It must suck when you make fun of someones gun at the range and in return yours ends up a lemon.

Just wanted to stop in and say hi, been awhile. Also just bought a Ruger Ar 556 and it works flawlessly outa the box. I saw this post and others before I purchased one. It was a toss up between the Ruger or the M&P15 Sport II. Glad I stuck with the Ruger, always had great luck with every Ruger I've ever bought.
I grabbed a couple boxes of PMC x-tac. Worked fine so I picked up another 1,000 rnds and ten mags on a weekend special deal.

What do you mean by it would "lockup" when dry firing? What exactly is happening?

I had the same problem with my AR556 out of the box. Yuuuge disappointment since every Ruger that I've purchased prior to this one (7 others) have been flawless.

After dry firing, it was nearly impossible to pull the charging handle back. It essentially took taps from a brass hammer with the release lever depressed. I read the forums, took the gun apart, cleaned it, lubed it, basically soaked it in CLP and put it back together and took it to the range. The charging handle was still very difficult to pull but the rifle fired ok for one magazine and then it was nearly impossible to pull the charging handle back again (with the hammer down).

I took the gun back to Cabelas and they sent it to Ruger and I just got it back. They told me that they replaced the bolt. The charging process works fine now. I'm still waiting to hit the range and see if it shoots, feeds, cycles, etc. That is a bit disconcerting. How did this rifle get this far through production and be tested and proofed and sold without this basic fundamental issue being identified?

I also bought the UTG quad rail and the thing didn't fit right. When it locks into the slots around the Ruger style (non mil spec) delta ring, it's either canted to the left or the right. Don't know if the rail is defective or not. I sent it back and ordered a different model and will see if that one fits.

If I had to do it over again, I would have bought a Mil-spec AR. I bought into the Ruger reputation and the great reviews on youtube and in the gun writing press. So far, I'm less than impressed.

We'll see how it turns out in the end. I hope my faith in Ruger is restored.

Yes, that would have been my guess, that either the bolt or the barrel extension, or both were out of spec, causing the bolt to jam in the barrel extension. If the carbine is now working after replacement of the bolt, hopefully the barrel extension is OK.

Your point that this type of problem should not have made it past quality control is valid.
