Added a Magpul MOE stock, Colt carry handle, UTG PRO drop in rail. Also picked up a CMMG 22lr bolt conversion for it and it works great!!

Next once my order arrives will be a BCM Mod 4 charging handle, Magpul XTM handstop, KNS target front sight post & Surefire Procomp muzzle brake....

mykdee, how did you like this UTG PRO rail? I was thinking of getting that model.

I see that you replaced it eventually with a Magpul. Reason?

Thanks.

Sam, does that rear sight allow enough space to actually carry the gun by it? I've seen some that I can just barly get my hand into.
Thanks for sharing.

I put a UTG extended latch on mine, but as you can see earlier on in this thread, I've got my scope set pretty far back.

This is not mine. It's mykdee's rifle. I was just asking him about the UTG handguard. Sorry.

I don't think it is actually for carrying the rifle... at least the drill instructors never let us carry them that way. The original rifle had the charging handle on top under the "carry handle", so I think it was there to protect the charging handle and maybe add strength to the frame.

I also wouldn't carry the rifle by a bolt on one... not much difference than carrying your rifle around by the scope.

Thanks I never trained with one. When I was in the Army we had the M14. I've seen some ARs that shoot really well though & I think the bugs are pretty well worked out now.
I'm staying tuned, this is interesting. The .223 is an outstanding varmint cartridge & with an accurate one it'd be a lot of fun hunting Coyotes with.
I'm staying tuned to learn more.

Here's mine! I added Magpul furniture and a carry handle sight. Really cool and fun AR!

Just picked up my AR556 this weekend. Went to the grand opening for a local shop's new location to drop off my 10/22 Takedown to get its scope sighted, and ended up walking out with the AR. You guys are giving me plenty of ideas. I don't think I'll mod it out too much, but I can't keep it stock.

I guess I don't understand all the modificatioins. I understand a scope, we shoot better when we see better, but beyond that do all the modifications really make the rifle more useful? The quick detachable scope makes sense too if something goes wrong with the glass in just a bit you have irons to fall back on.
I've handled them with the pickatinny rails & most of them would leave my skin on them after a day of shooting? They are coarse & uncomfortable.
Thanks.

Mostly comfort and / or aesthetics. Different stocks provide different cheek weld and lock up tighter. Different grip might be more comfortable, especially if you have the A2 style grip. Same thing with hand guards, provide a different feel. Quad rails give you the ability to change a 6 lb. rifle into a 12 lb. rifle. Many of them will eat your hands, so you use gloves or rail covers.

It is a modular rifle with the ability to be changed easily. It's like Lego's... change something, and change it back if you don't like it. And it is a hobby.

I would agree with cypertext about the comfort and aesthetics. There may be a bit of pride in there, too. There are some nice ergonomic handguards out there. If you prefer to shoot from a bench, a bipod would be nice. Police like to put on lasers and lights. Professional shooters like a better trigger. The list goes on and on. At some point, you can double or even triple the original amount you paid for your rifle. If you are going to do that you could have built your own from parts and saved some money.

Here's my contribution to this thread...

* Ergonomic foregrip by CAA.
* Magazine by Hexmag (10/30).
* Extended quad rail is by Monstrum Tactical. It was cheap enough that I had no second thoughts about modifying it. This is how I fit the lower portion of the extended rail over the FSB. If anyone wants the dimensions, let me know.
