Nice looking AR Corey. I'm new to the AR scene and plan on buying my first one very soon. Had a chance to check out the new AR 556 a couple days ago and I really like it. I've looked at the Bushmasters and Whindam and DPMS and I keep going back to the ruger. Seeing the mods you've done to yours has sealed the deal for me. I'll be going this weekend to get the ruger.

Mine, still stock...

Here are a couple of mine still in out of box configuration.

I've been getting some accessories for it online. I'll post photos when I get them all installed.

I'm not going to go overboard, but here's what I've got so far:
Bushnell 1-4x AR scope
UTG QD cantilever mount
(2) QD 1/2" risers (got the mount and realized I couldn't keep the scope & mount and the iron sights).
UTG ambidextrous QD sling swivel mount
Slip-on butt pad

Not sure what else I'll put on it. I need a sling and another QD swivel.

So not to be rude, but why did you buy an AR556 if you were going to change so much? Wouldn't it have been easier and cheaper to just build an AR?

no punches needed its a simple drop in operation

it probably would have been cheaper and easier but it wouldn't say RUGER stamped anywhere on the gun....good looking stick!

Add-ons...

Got all the stuff in and then took a trip to Cabelas (DE) to get a couple more accessories.

Scope & Mount, Left view:

Scope & Mount, Right View:

Accessories:
Bushnell 1-4x AR scope with the "Drop-Shot" Reticle
UTG QD cantilever mount
(2) generic QD 1/2" risers (got the mount and realized I couldn't keep the scope & mount and the iron sights).
UTG ambidextrous QD sling swivel mount
Generic Slip-on butt pad
Magpul QD Socket on buttstock
Magpul picatinny rail section on forearm
Pachmayr Slip-on Pistol Grip #3 (doesn't fit perfectly, but I had it in a drawer)
Spec-Ops Patrol Sling (not pictured)
Magpul QD Swivel (need to get a second one because the one that came with the QD mount is a bit small)

After mounting the piece of rail, I mounted this cheap, folding vertical grip that I have for my crossbow and didn't really like it, so I'll leave the rail in case I get a bipod sometime down the road...

I got a great deal on the gun itself. It was actually cheaper for me to buy the gun then "rebuild" it to where I wanted it. It was a fun project! Shoots great, definitely not an "entry level" AR anymore.

Aqualung

How does the picatinny rail section mount to the forearm?

It comes with screws and oval nuts. They go through a couple vent holes in the bottom handguard.

I may be wrong but I believe those holes may work as a quick disconnect attachment point for a QD sling

Like the scope mount your using. If it were mine I would center that scope in the mount so your not putting more pressure on the tube at the turrets. That can be an issue with the scope binding up and not moving the cross hairs correctly.

I would have to assume he turned the scope mount backwards, as well as adding that spacer..to make room for the BUIS(that and trying to look over the FSB when in 1x power). But in doing so, the rear of the scope is way too far back for proper eye relief. The back end of that scope (I have one) is made to be mounted much farther forward, being at least 'just above or slightly in front of' the charging handle.

Just like this rifle.. Its hard to tell, but to overcome the issue of the BUIS sights, it has small, light weight 45 degree off set front and back irons. Thats what I'm doing with mine(as soon as my mount and BUIS get here). That way they're out of the way, but can be used instantly without having to remove the scope.

Another example of the Bushy 1x4 located on an AR. You could run a diff mount thats slightly taller. This is the one I have coming for the Bushnell 1x4 illuminated(just got it today), and it looks like it has the clearance to run that Magpul rr BUIS under its rr bell.

Another example.

And another.
