Why in the world did Ruger quit manufacturing the Deerfield 44 mag. I had an opportunity to buy one several years ago, but at the time I did not have the cash. I am still kicking myself!!!!!!!!!!

I had one briefly. It was a fun rifle to shoot, but there was a problem with frame cracks in some of them. it may have been an insurmountable problem for Ruger.

I'd like to get some more info about this problem if anyone has it... My dad bought a deerfield about 5-6 years ago. He hasn't shot it much, but I know he would like to know about this. He's a Ruger .44 nut. He has three of the original .44 carbines, 1 deerfield, the lever action 96/44, and the bolt action 77/44. Oh, and a Super Blackhawk.

I recently found one in a LGS. it's a 1978 model that has the "Quick-Site" see through mounts and a cheap "Arms Sport" 3X9X40 scope. The only bullets I have on hand are 200 gr XTPs. Best shooting load was with 25.4 grains of IMR4227, 2.7 inches at 100 yards with a velocity of 1750 fps. I gave the carbine a good cleaning to include the gas piston and it functions nicely piling brass about 6 feet away at 2 o'clock. I have some 240 gr XTPs coming and 100 new starline cases. I'm hoping the 240 gr will shoot better groups.

Tom | That's about the best I've gotten out of mine. 3" or so at 100. Plenty good for me. I dont shoot heads, and rarely shoot further than 100, if ever, as I don't carry it anywhere that gives me that option.

I'll be satisfied if I can get the groups down to 1.5" to 2".

Tom | That's understandable. I don't personally know anyone, or at least on a day to day basis, with this rifle, so I'm not sure what to expect.
If this was a bolt gun, I'd most certainly be knocking down the door at Ruger if that's the best I could get...well probably not since this was an heirloom and I'm quite content with it just sitting in the safe.
I also had issues keeping the barrel band tight, which may effect my accuracy. Added a dehumidifier to the safe room and of course the wood isnt as tight.

Tom | Maybe some work on the trigger could help. I had my old 44 Magnum Carbine done by a fellow in Colorado, Bill Springfield who did a real good job. Bill Springfield - www.TriggerWork.net |

My wife has taken over my 44 mag Carbine. She used it last month to take a 335 lb Hog and a nice Whitetail Doe on our hunt in Missouri. It really does the job in the 100 yard and under shooting we were doing. It is a very early gun...with a 3 diget derial number.
Since I no long have access to that 44, I have a Bolt Action Model 77/44 on the way. it should arrive next week, and I will switch out the black synthetic stock for a lightweight Laminate thumbhole to go with the SS finish of the rifle. Photos as soon as I get it together.
