I have a chance to trade for an early model with the tube mag, but I'm not that familiar with the design change to rotary mag that came later (when & why it was done)..Any insight on the pitfalls of an older 44 carbine with tube mag vs rotary mag?

All input appreciated

Having not had the pleasure to shoot the magazine model (Deerfield) and owning an earlier tube model which it shoots wonderfully IMO. That said one less part a magazine and you can’t just have one (extra cost). The Deerfield uses a different bolt which is the Mini 14 in fact it looks just like an early Mini except for the receiver. If you’re buying ready-made ammo there's not much of the pointed stuff (Hornady) out there. Most of its flat tip HP's and JSP. and if you’re a reloader and can enjoy your 44 carbine more often the ones I mentioned are readily available components. In the end you'll enjoy the 44 mag. carbine for punching paper or hunting.

I have the newer gen mag version. It was built the last yr of production(forget. it was 05 or 06 tho). Its my new current go-to for Whitetail deer here in the SE mtns. My late brother bought it new back in the day. Super light and quick handling. The .44 mag from an 18" barrel does just fine under 110-120yrds. One of my all time favorite hunting rifles.
