Are Mini-14 & Mini-30 stocks the same?

This is a discussion on Are Mini-14 & Mini-30 stocks the same? within the Ruger Semi-Auto forums, part of the Rifle & Shotgun Forum category; Are Mini-14 and Mini-30 stocks interchangeable? More specifically, will the birch stock from a Mini-14 go on a Mini-30 that came the synthetic stock?...

The part number for the wooden Mini 14 stock is #MS00401.

And for the wooden Mini 30 is #MS00402.

Therefore I suspect these are manufactured to different tolerances.

And so the answer is probably not.

I don't have one of each however, so I cannot tell you for certain.

From a quick query against MidwayUSA's catalog it appears they are interchangeable (Hogue and other stocks are for both the 14 and 30).

However, I don't own a 14 so can't say for sure.

Alas, no. If they are the same though, then my next question is why does Ruger only offer the Mini-30 in synthetic? I think I'd prefer a Mini in 7.62x39, but I would want a wood stock.

I can tell you I bought a factory mini 14 stock from a friend and put my mini 30 in it.
Tight fit, which I like. No issues. Mags fit fine.
I have read where some claim to open the mag well for a mini 30.
I did not need to.

This is correct. When I bought the Mini14/30 (that was the part number and description) of the ATI stock. It specifically said that if installing on a mini30, it might be tight around the magwell and fitting might be required. so, if you have a mini 14 stock and you want to put it on a 30, then you;ll be fine. A mini 30 stock on a 14 might be a little loose. If you can reload your magazine, you should be able to clearance a stock....

Mini 30 mags are not rectangular front to rear so the mag well is wider. I believe That's why the stock numbers are different. I've heard for some after market stocks you may have to do some fitting for a Mini 30. I've never worked on a Mini 30 yet, but in have seen one next to a Mini 14 before.

I have a stainless Mini 14 rifle and a blued Mini 30 Ranch rifle and the factory wood stocks will not interchange. I tried it last year and the magazine well inserts are different hence the cutout in the stocks are different. The reason I tried it is because I wanted to tac out my 14, but the wood is so beautifully grained (and the 30's wood is very dull) I wanted to put the pretty wood on the blued 30. Didn't work out that way. Still deciding what I want to do....

I wonder why mine worked? Didn't have to inlet anything.
Used a mini 30 insert.
Like I said, it is a tight fit, but tight is good for a stock.
It works fine so I don't want to start carving on it.
Mags fit and it cycles fine. Go figure.

The Mini 14 and Mini 30 receivers are the same and will fit, but the magazines, magazine cutouts in the Ruger factory polymer stocks and the magazine reinforcements on wood stocks and on some aftermarket polymer stocks that require the magwell reinforcement bracket are different. They can be adapted to fit all calibers with minimal work/parts.

The Ruger factory wood stocks for the Mini 14 and Mini 30 are slightly different to accommodate the different magwell reinforcement brackets that are mounted in the stock. The Mini 14 and Mini 30 magwell reinforcement are the same dimensions front and rear, but are constructed differently to accommodate the different size magazines for the Mini 14 and Mini 30. Actually it is a pretty slick solution by Ruger engineers to get the wider 7.62x39mm cartridge to fit in the 5.56/.223 Mini rifle. The mini 30 wood stock was cut a bit wider on the sides of the magwell to accommodate the wider magazine/reinforcement of the mini 30, nothing major about 1/8" on each side of the magazine reinforcement bracket cutout. That said a mini 30 stock, or a mini 14 stock that was made to take, and has in it, a mini 30 magwell will accept either a Mini 14 or Mini 30 receiver along with their respective magazines and be perfectly happy.
The Butler Creek stocks, folders and sporter style, require the magwell reinforcement and will accept either a Mini 30 or Mini 14 magwell reinforcement without any modification and use either caliber magazines with the appropriate receiver. But if you have a mini 14 magwell installed you will be able to switch over receivers but the mini 30 magazines will not fit because of the narrower mini 14 magwell reinforcement bracket.
In recent years Ruger has discontinued the wood stocks, with the magwell reinforcement, for the mini 30. The mini 30 magwell reinforcement brackets and attaching screws and washers are still available from Ruger, MidwayUSA, Brownell and others.
The picture below shows both the Mini 30 (top) and Mini 14 (lower) reinforcement brackets in Butler Creek stocks. In the lower picture the unfilled areas next to the reinforcement bracket is the amount of material that would need to be removed for a good fit for modifying a Mini 14 stock to work with the Mini 30 reinforcement bracket and magazines. Remember once the Mini 30 reinforcement bracket is in it will also work with the Mini 14 receiver and magazines and most likely the Mini in 6.8 SPC.

WB. Thank you very much for the picture and discription.
Now I know what I was missing.
Took about 20 minutes to remove the extra material. Mags drop free now.
