Hyper Velocity rds in the SR22

My question is, does anyone know without contacting Ruger directly, if one can shoot the Aquila Super Max 22 LR in a SR22? The manual only states to not use subsonic rds and to not use high or hypervelocity rds with a suppressor attached. I shot various brands today at the range, most shot more than satisfactory, however, I shot 3 rds of the aquila super max just to see what they would do and man 3 shots, 2holes. Nice. These are a joint effort of Remington, Eley and Aquila in Mexico. Remington furnishes part, Eley primes, and then sent to Mexico for completion and packaging. Velocity is about 100 to 125 fps faster than CCI's Stinger. Just got these last week, bought wife and i one each and do not want to do anything to damage or cause excessive wear. Thanks for any input/experience.

I contacted Ruger about the use of Stingers in the SR22's. They said it was no problem to use them. How Stingers compare to the ammo you're using I don't know. But they are great little pistols rated for hyper velocity ammo. You could also call or email them, they're great at getting back to you.

Thanks for the info soapy. I was really impressed by the performance of the Aguila Super Max ammo, but I think I will just shoot the regular high velocity in it to keep from causing premature wear. These rounds out of a rifle do about 1750fps and they are awesome, so much so, I sold my 22 magnum. I really want my SR22 to be around for awhile as I typically shoot several hundred rounds each time I go to the range and now that my wife has her Glock 9mm and a SR22, we burn thru some ammo. Can't wait for all the madness to end so I can get reloading components for the 9mm and be able to find bulk 22 ammo again. How are things in Vegas? I imagine it's pretty crazy out there as well.

I shot several hundred rounds of the aguila super max high velocity with no issues. Except that I find the high velocity round less accurate. Standard velocity rounds produced better groups.

Ya it's nuts out here to. You go to the gun shows oh they got ammo just leave your first born. About 12,000 people are show up to each one. I won't play their game . I just checked Midway site. They say expect to have Federal bulk .22lr back in stock 10/2013. This is just nuts.

Spoke to a Ruger rep today and was told that the SR22 Pistol is designed for use up to high velocity ammo of 1300 fps or less. Ruger did not recommend shooting hyper velocity ammo. I asked specifically about Remington Yellow Jacket at 1500 fps and was told that that was not recommended. Maybe occasional use is okay but not constant use?

Occasional use, not constant, use is a good rule of thumb with hyper ammo. That being said, I occasionally shoot Velocitors (rated 1435 fps). Standard 40gr weight and case length. Penetrates deeper than Stingers.

mcwsky09 will become famous soon enough
I shot some CCI Stingers with a Smith & Wesson M&P 22 recently - did not have my SR22 with me that day - small increase in felt recoil but not much else that I noted - but I was focussed on a couple .380s I was shooting that day - so 20 rounds of stingers without doing a side by side comparison might may not be significant.

The M&P shooter commented that the difference between them and Federal bulk was noticeable. But it didn't seem drastic enough to me that I would be concerned about excessive recoil affecting operation or wear.

Strange as to what they told islandguy as here's the mail I got from Ruger. They may have changed their minds about hyper velocity due to early problems with take down lever failures.

Thank you for using the Ruger On-Line Customer Support Request Form.

This e-mail is in response to your question or comment of 04/26/2012

Comment / question:

The use of CCI stingers in SR22's and MKIII target pistols. Are they safe to use in these guns and is the use of these recommended by Ruger for ocassional use
Thank you
Great products. The craftmanship on my SR1911 is first class. Beats my kimber.

Response:
You can use the CCI Stingers in your SR22 pistol.

Do Not use CCI Stingers in your Mark III pistol. The MKIII pistol is chambered only for the .22 caliber Long Rifle cartridge, standard velocity or high velocity, manufactured to U.S. Industry Standards. CCI Stingers are hyper-velocity, over 1300 fps.

The problem is that Ruger has spelled nothing out in black & white. Fear that the competition will announce their model is hyper-velocity approved, lawyers being lawyers, the right people talking to the right people, or a combination of all of this..... Who knows.

But then the SR has been out for over a year and they still have not updated the picture showing how to adjust the rear sight (description is right picture is wrong) to move the group to the left or right. Give me two minutes with photoshop and I could fix it with no problem at all. And it is just a PDF file to boot.

Never write something when you can say it, never say something when you can nod, and never nod when you can wink. Said over 80 years ago but still true today.......
