With the current state of affairs, it's hard and expensive to find extra mags. Do the Mark 11's and Mark 111's interchange? Can Mark 11's be modified to fit or vice versa?

One of the things Ruger changed with the Mk III was the magazine release. Completely different location and mechanism.

The MKIII mag has a cutout and lip near the top of the magazine, on the left side, but otherwise appears the same as a Mk II, at least to my eye.

I can actually fit an MK III mag in my MKII, but haven't actually tried to fire the gun with it in place. In a pinch, I could probably do whatever it took to make it work, say, bending that lip in so that it doesn't hang up in the mag reservoir. However, I see no reason to do this as MKIII mags are available in my area. I'd have to be pretty desperate to go down that road.

Going the other way, though - using an MKII in an MKIII - is not going to work at all. A Mark III needs that cutout and lip on the mag to hold the mag in place.

I have used MK III mags in my MK II, and they worked just fine.

MKII mags will not work in a MK III as they will not lock into place because of not having the slot cut in them as mentioned above.

Thought they would, but didn't want to say so without trying them. Thanks

You can use Mark II 22/45 magazines in your Mark III, they have the same metal body as their older generation counterparts sans the upper window for the trigger spur. However you must change out the plastic bottom block to fit into the metal framed pistol. Not having a upper window for the Mark III trigger is no problem because the trigger spur is scalloped and doesn't enter into the magazine's metal body. The same is true for using Mark III mags in Mark II's, as long as the bumps fit through the magwell opening in the bottom of the grip the magazines will work.
