Thanks for this.

I'm a little concerned that the guy that sold me my Mark III handed me a box of Stingers when I asked what ammo was recommended for these pistols. This is a shop that promotes themselves as being the #1 Ruger dealer in the USA.

The RUGERŪ MARK II pistol is chambered only for the .22 caliber Long
Rifle cartridge, standard velocity or high velocity, manufactured to U.S. Industry
Standards. Do not attempt to load .22 Long, .22 Short, or any other type .22
caliber cartridge into the magazine or in the chamber of the pistol. Use of .22
shot shells is not recommended. See MALFUNCTION WARNING, p. 18.

This is what I remember. It's comes across as implying that you should not use hyper velocity simply by saying only standard and high velocity are aproved. This is from the manual for MkIIs made from 1982 to 2005. Ok, no more Stingers for the old gal.

The owners manual is vague about the recommendation not to use Hyper-V ammo. I think it should be rewritten to include the warning not to use H-V ammo. The FAQ on Rugers websight states no H-V ammo.

I have been researching it and the velocity doesn't mean a hill of beans. With the longer brass of the Hyper Velocity rounds though you can and will over time tear up the rifling. I'm just going to sell off all my HV ammo tonight and buy High Velocity standard length.

WAIT! That extra Hyper-V ammo is a great reason to buy a .22 revolver...

So I was talking to my buddy the other night while we were troubleshooting my 22/45, he brought his 22/45 along with to compare. He was telling me about how it was his first gun he ever owned, he has had it since he was a teenager. Anywho, we were talking about dirty ammo and cleaning and stuff, and he mentioned that all he shoots is CCI Stingers. He has had this pistol for about 6+ years and has put nothing but Stingers through it, and his gun still runs like a champ. Over 6 years of putting Stingers through his gun... I know a lot of people are picky and finicky and afraid to mess up their barrels or other parts, but it looks like his barrel is doing just fine. I'm not advocating anyone to use them, but just saying he does, and I also do too. To each their own.

I hear you but you can't blame Ruger if you have a failure in your guns as this is what Ruger says about Stingers in MK's. Don't forget the casing on a Stinger is 1/10" longer than standard 22LR's 1/10" is alot.

Comment / question:

The use of CCI stingers in SR22's and MKIII target pistols. Are they safe to use in these guns and is the use of these recommended by Ruger for ocassional use
Thank you
Great products. The craftmanship on my SR1911 is first class. Beats my kimber.

Response:
You can use the CCI Stingers in your SR22 pistol.

Do Not use CCI Stingers in your Mark III pistol. The MKIII pistol is chambered only for the .22 caliber Long Rifle cartridge, standard velocity or high velocity, manufactured to U.S. Industry Standards. CCI Stingers are hyper-velocity, over 1300 fps.

I also have shot quite a few Stingers, and Remington YellowJackets out of my Mark II. Did I do any damage? I dont know. I really doubt it, but I dont plan on shooting them anymore. They never were terribly accurate, I dont see any situation where a standard high velocity round wont do the job. Maybe long range small varmit hunting, but still a High Velocity round will work. If you want them for SD, then thats fine, and Im sure the extra power is a good thing, but for anything else, I would just find a good, high quality, name brand High-v round and stick with that.

What I found is they will tear out the rifling. Makes sense with the extra long brass.

BTW I have a ton of Hyper Velocity ammo for sale. I'm trying to find out if we can list ammo here for sale. PM me if interested though.

Since you guys are the experts here and I'm a noob, I think I'll take your guys word for it. After I am done with my last box or two of Stingers, I'll switch to something else. Thanks for the detailed info... it's nice to know other people out there are looking out for each other.

No expert here. I just read the info and passed it along but someone with measuring tools could confirm.

SonsOfLiberty86 that's what this forum is all about helping one another. Look how much Bullseye posts. That kind of info would cost alot of $ anywere else if you could find it. He's a gunsmith and passing on his knowledge for free. You don't find that very often.

In my owners manual it says 22LR only in standard velocity or High Velocity, & NO shot shells, 22long, 22 short, or any other type 22 caliber cartridge.

I like what I've learned here so far. You are all awesome. I will be in the market soon for Mark III and I am trying to read as much as I can.

I am not a newbie to handguns (been using 1911s, Beretta, etc) but a definite newbie when it comes to rimfire.
