| Bought used Mark II...few questions.
Hello I have lurked around for a bit and finally decided to join after buying three different Ruger's in the last six months. I bought I new Mini 14 tactical, new stainless 10/22 and my most recent purchase was a Mark II target model...used of course. I have a couple of questions about the Mark II.
First, a question about the sights. Can the sights (front and rear) be changed out on the Mark II target....non bull barrel? Reason I ask is I don't really like the sights so far, but I guess I could get use to them eventually. Most Mark II after market sights I have seen say they are for the bull barrel.
Second....my Mark II is not drilled and tapped for a scope. Can it be drilled and tapped by a gunsmith? Is it worth it? Not sure I would add a scope but in case I ever wanted to I wanted to know.
Third...any way to tell what year my gun is?
Fourth....as far as magazines go....are their any good after market options or is Ruger branded the best way to go. Can anyone suggest a good place to buy magazines? Mine only came with 1.
I got a chance Sunday to fire the weapon and so far I love the feel and smoothness. I had my kids with me and they were shooting my 10/22 so I did not really get a good alone time with my Mark II to get a real good feel on how it was shooting as far as on target. Maybe one of these days I can get a good chance to do that so I can get it sighted in and get good groupings and plink some targets. So I appreciate any help of suggestions anyone can give. My sister also bought two Ruger's....the Ruger 380 (forget exact model LC?) and she bought a SR22. So we have just become a Ruger family as of late. Thanks.

First, a question about the sights.
MK II Target sights can be swapped out, but why? Spend your money on trigger work.
Second....my Mark II is not drilled and tapped for a scope.
A competent gunsmith can drill and tap. There is also a mount that replaces the rear sight.
Third...any way to tell what year my gun is?
Post a photo here. Lots of experts will be along to ID it for you.
Fourth....as far as magazines go....are their any good after market options or is Ruger branded the best way to go.
Stick with Ruger mags; Ramline did make 14 round mags that you can find used at gun shows, but most folks don't know how to keep them working properly.

Thanks for the reply...Shortly after I posted I saw the scope mount options that require no drilling. So trigger job over a different set of sites? Hmm. I ended up painting the tip of the front sight with bright orange nail polish so I could see it. That was my big concern. Previous owner had painted it red and it was dark so I brightened it up. I thought maybe a different sight with a colored front tip would maybe be better. I kinda figured Ruger magazines were best. Now I just need to find the best deal on one. I will post a picture later and see if anyone can give me an idea on the year. Thanks again

Take a look at the pistol's serial number and match it up with this product history chart from Ruger. Ruger Mark II Serial Number History

I put Firesights on a Bull Barrel and a Slabside...I like 'em.
The few non-Ruger mags I did buy gave me feed problems.

Thanks for all the replies and welcome. Looking forward to having a chance to shoot it again. There is a gunsmith who lives about a block away I may go chat with him for a bit.
