Question 22/45 Target Mark III questions

As I read my manual, the stated loading process of first removing the magazine and then cycling the bolt is really to allow the safety to be engaged before a loaded magazine is inserted. In other words, I could insert a loaded mag into the un-cocked gun and then cycle the bolt when ready to fire. Correct?

Also, the bolt is harder to pull back when going from un-cocked to cocked. Once it's cocked, it can be cycled easier. Is this normal?

Finally, I've notice that I really need to be very firm when inserting a magazine (not loaded). Is this normal?

I haven't cleaned it yet. May do so this weekend. I've watched the videos on the Ruger site. Disassembly seems less intimidating that re-assembly.

Question one... Yes. Question two... Yes Question three... well... Yes and No. I have 3 Mark III 22/45s. Two of them, the magazines arent hard to insert. One of them the magazine takes a real push to insert. Just differences in different guns. It should wear in with use and get easier with time. I dont think its a concern. Once you understand the reassembly process, its a piece of cake to complete. If you mod the gun by removing the magazine safety, reassembly is a snap.

Magazine insertions can be "difficult" in the Mark III models. Much of that depends on how stiff the spring is in the mag release button. The magazine's locking bump must pass underneath it to latch. If you depress the button momentarily when the mag stops and push on the mag base at the same time you can overcome the resistance and get a nice "pop" from the button as it fully seats. Another thing to be cautious about is ensuring that the magazine is being inserted straight up into the magwell, any angular, (forward, backward, left, or right) insertion and the magazine's feed lips can catch on the internal parts and make insertion difficult too.

22/45 Target

I looking at attaching a Pachmayr magazine bumper or pad to each of my mags. I just bought a 4" MKIII 22/45 and because the mags fit flush, they don't always "click" when I insert them. The bumpers should take care of the issue. My gun, too, is very, very stiff, but so was my MKII when I first bought it. So, I assume the MKIII will wear in as time goes by. I am doing the slingshot mod, grip mod and mag disconnect mod.
