No doubt you need to use your iron sights when first learning ... |

You don't 'need' the laser. Of course you'll find out that there are a lot of things you don't need, but really want. The SR22 is a great choice, not only for a first pistol, but a great pistol to have for all the reasons listed above. And I don't even have one (yet).
Give the pistol a shot first and if you decide a laser is needed, it could be something your fiancee could get you for your B-Day or X-mas, or just a gift to make your day.
Enjoy and let us know what you think when you get it.
The SR22 would also be a great pistol for her to learn on if you can get her to try it.

| sr22 as first gun
I have 1 and I absolutely love it. considering I have several guns I have to rate it up in my top 1 or 2. I have a lasermax red laser on mine. A fitted holster with laser attached is available through jackson leather works.

Thanks for all of your great posts. I can't wait till I can get this. Hopefully the gun shop on my way home tomorrow will have one in stock so I can actually hold one. I'll keep you guys updated on what happens... Oh and my fiancée did say she would shoot with me. She's gone out with me when I shot my bolt action 22 but it's not as fun having to share one gun so this should make her like it more.

Hey Monkey, have you considered one of the Marks, e.g. Mark III, Mark, II, etc?

One of my friends has one and they shoot great but I don't necessarily like the looks of them. I'll probably get a lot of grief from people for saying that, but I definitely like the looks of the SR22 a lot better. I have also heard that they are a pain to field strip. With this being my first pistol I think that I would love how easy the SR22 is to field strip.

Ice,
you've generated a lot of comments on the SR22. I love mine and evreyone who has shot it wants one. SR22pb is that the SR22 can be either Ruger's .22 rifle or pistol, hence the "p", for pistol. The "b" is for the blued finish. I considered the the Mk III myself but after holding the SR22 and the Mk III, I was easily convinced that the SR 22 was the best choice for my wife and myself. Lighter, modern looking, and and a dream to field strip and clean. I did as was suggested before on the laser, used it and then made the decision for the laser. It makes it super easy for my wife to get plenty of "Bulls" without getting discouraged. I bought the Laserlyte V3 Sub-compact for $80 plus tax. I'm extremely pleased with it and would highly recommend it. It has power up buttons on either side (we are both lefty's). The battery life has been fantastic. So far I haven't had to change out from the supplied ones even though I bought a 12 pack for $9. I use CCI 40g. Stingers for mama if she needs self defense and any other round for target, and there will be plenty of target with this super fun .22. I'm over a 1000 and it seems to be shooting even better than out of the box? Between it and my Ruger 10/22 rifle we have barrel of fun and tear up some targets!! ; )
Hope you get one and have the same pleasure we've had.
Take care,
Tony |

Tony | Thanks I hope that I can find one when the time comes. Just found out that there are actually a couple gun shops in town. I doubt that they'll have one in stock though. I know the town next to my hometown has had one in stock before. If I was going to get a laser I think I would save for a crimson trace I love the way they look on this gun

I have to say the CT on my LCP is a little brighter than the Laserlyte but three times the cost. I wouldn't trade the CT for anything on the LCP.
Good luck on a purchase, they are a little hard to get.
Take care,
Tony

Well I just got back from my LGS and they had two in stock, but he's asking 380 for them. Do you guys think that is a fair price? It is a small town. Also, I'm turning 21 in a month but was thinking about having a friend that is already 21 buy it for me and then give it to me. Is there any laws against that or anything that needs to be done to be able to do that?

Fired several hundred rounds through both of my SR22's yesterday. One jamb on the feedramp, otherwise flawless.
I only use a laser for boresighting and sometimes to see what I'm doing when I pull the trigger using a snapcap (shake, side pull etc...) but otherwise do not use them and have never fired a round using a laser. I think they easily become a crutch and allow bad habits to form. Focus on what is in your hand and not some dot flying around you'll never be able to aquire in a panic.

I would check your state laws regarding your friend purchasing it for you.

Paid $339 without the crutch...... ; ) I don't usually panic at the range? I never miss at 6 Ft. with or without a crutch and red lights pointed at me will cause a panic!!

When they first came out, I saw some at a Gun Show for $299. You should be able to get one for less than $350 easy. Buds Gun Shop has the SR22 with the Crimson Trace Laser for $399 and free shipping. You would only have to pay FFL transfer fee. Just a thought.

If buying a laser for an SR22 will take away from shooting it often, then it would certainly be a mistake. And I wouldn't recommend it to a beginner for a .22 range weapon.
I found the laser to be helpful in identifying some of the things I was doing wrong on my 9mm. Even an inexperienced range partner could tell me what happened to the muzzle while I fired lol. The laser isn't needed to fire the SR22 successfully, learn, and have fun. While you might find it helpful, I really don't think its the second place to spend your money. Ammo and range time are.
Yes, I have a CT Railmaster on my SR22, because my wife can't hold a pistol at eye level very long or very steady. Using the laser, she can drop her arms down and have a better chance of enjoying things while trying to hit the bullseye.
