SR22 takedown latch opens by itself

They was the first time I shot it. Went through 40 rounds of CC! MINI MAG ammo with no problems. Then the problem started, when firing the gun as the slide cycled the take down latch located in front of the trigger would open by itself causing the gun to lock open and not fire. I guess its loose or something. For clarification this is the latch you open to disassemble the gun for field stripping. I'm not worried because I know Ruger will take care of it. Did anyone else have the identical problem?

I do like the thought of one being out now without the 'PISTOL' on the slide, I didn't care for that at all.

this happened to me today with my almost brand new SR22. It had MAYBE 100 rounds though it, had a few FTFs and the slide flew off my pistol and down range. luckily i was at the range where i bought it and they gave me a new pistol, but i'm terrified that this will become an issue, especially after reading that it's a problem for so many others.

Your lucky they gave you a new one. Here in Las Vegas. The gun is registered to you right away. No returns. I'm sure Ruger will take care of this problem.I've 2 SR22'ss with about 500 rounds each thru them with no problems. Ruger is selling these like crazy. But they always been good with customer service. Your the second post I've seen were the slide went flying down range.

Hi i've got a Kimber 1911 .45 cal as per Kimbers manual new recoil spring every 800 rounds and this is $1100. gun. I've never seen anything in any off my Ruger manuals about having to change them after a specifed # of rounds. I know they do lose tension after awhile and you end up with fail to feed issues. I aree with Rut that you shouldn't have to keep checking the take down lever. I believe Ruger will fix this issue. Because I believe take down lever aside this is the best litte 22 semi out there. Read some ofthe posts about the Walther P22 which is not new as has problems.

I love Rugers all have been trouble free. I agree I think they rush them out to quick. The SR9's had to recalled, the LCP's had to recalled and I feel the SR22's may have to be too. I have two of them which I love and have been trouble free so far. I think Ruger builds great guns but why does it take recalls to make them great.:confused:

SR22 JUNK?

Is the SR22 JUNK? Seriously got a lightly used one, around 2015. I put under a few hundred rounds and it flew apart. So did some reading and got the twin tech tactical TDL replacement and used only regular 22LR ammo, less than hundred rounds latter its breaking apart.
On my part, the only thing I’ve done possible is spray down the SR 22 when cleaning with Silcon spray recently. But the TDL is always securely latched and firmly in place.
Talked with Ruger and want me to spend $30 shipping for it to shipped out east. I live in Prescott AZ, where all the Ruger Pistol except this one is serviced from what here. Ruger says it rarely happens, I keep hearing online about the same problems. I’m not running a can or hot ammo which Twin Tech Tacitacal tired to use as a reasoning or leaving the lever down. They are crazy if they think I’m not closing the lever completely, but it does get knocked open during the recoil during the failures.
Does SR22 need a stronger recoil spring, or the early models frames just flawed and the TDL just will not secure. It’s the most unreliable pistol I have ever had and or heard of.

Twin Tech is sending out another TDL, and will reslove the issue for the moment. The larger issue is why does the recoil destroy the the TDL. Wonder what the specs for the recoil spring (can you even buy just the recoil spring) are or the width measurements of the frame that the TDL sits in. Something wrong. Most likely going to find someone else who interested in putting up with the unreliability concern. Having several failures of the slide just flying off, trying updated TDL and still seeing the problem hundred or so rounds latter is beyond anything that going to instill confidence. Ruger could cooperate and give some direct tech support on the subject.

Just put the replacement TDL from twin tech tactical, its tight. But the other one I recall was tight from them also, the orig ruger was looser fitting. Sense two TDL with light use have been gone threw, I'm looking to get away from SR22, unless the I knew the that going to the aftermarket recoil spring would make a differences. Soooooooo disappointed with the lack of clear support for the problem.

Why did Ruger move support for this one model out of Prescott where I live, to some place across the country where shipping and everything else is more complicated.

Well it looks like this issue has been around for years. I recently purchased an SR22 (January 2017). I have shot ~300 rounds through it. One day last, the slide started sticking in the rearward position and trying to dislodge from the frame and the takedown lever was knocked down. I re-racked and the same thing happened again. I took the gun apart and could see that the take down block had been visibly damaged. I called Ruger and the tech that I spoke too said he had never heard of this issue and sent me another TDL for free. I received the TDL 3-4 days later (3/25/17), installed it, shot 5 rounds through it and the slide tried to come off and the TDL was half way down. I re-racked and reset the TDL and held a finger over it when I fired the next round. It really stung my finger as it tried to come down again. I took the slide off and the new TDL was destroyed, worse than the first one. Literally 5 rounds and it blew up the new TDL. I bought this gun because I have owned a 10/22 for 30+ years and love it. I also owned a P85 9mm. I cant say much for its accuracy but it performed well. I thought that I could expect quality form Ruger but after reading how long this issue has been going on, without Ruger making some kind of design change blows me away. If I could get my money back, I would.

SR 22 TDL

Really threw me having the problems, live in Prescott area and thought the world of Ruger being here locally.

I went threw several TDL both from ruger and aftermarket. What the after market TDL told me is not to have any lube around the TDL lever, so spary cleaner and lube is a thing of the past.

What I have done is gone with aftermarket TDL and recoil spring up grades. the recoil spring from the factory is 4 pounds, aftermarket is 41/2 pounds. I made it threw several hundred round this time so far, still has not blown apart so far. With less lube did have the slide hang up and have just added just a drop of oil on both sides of the back of slide away from the front.

My impression is the design of having that type of TDL where the slide comes back is undesirable.

I have an SR-22 bought new in 2017. It had an alloy takedown latch.

After around 150 standard rounds (Thunderbolt) the slide flew downrange and the latch was open.

Sent it back to Ruger, which said it replaced the latch and it was now all good.

Another 150 rounds and another slide launch.

Put it back together and tried to watch for the latch loosening. Fired around 50 rounds of Thunderbolt, then rapid fire of ten rounds of CCI Mini-Mag (still pretty mild). Latch securely closed.

Then after around 15 rounds of additional Thunderbolt, the slide launched again and the latch was open.

I have asked Ruger for a replacement pistol inasmuch as it doesn't seem to be able to diagnose the problem with mine, and a gun that flies apart without meaningful warning (except maybe looking at the latch after every shot) is not commercially acceptable.

Wow I haven’t seen one of these posts in a long time as you see the original post is really old. I have two SR22’s both with about a 1000 reds thru each with no problems. One I sent 550 reds thru it in one session without issues. Back in the earlier days we put a o ring on the guide rod to act as a cushion. I know you shouldn’t have to do that. I would diffidently contact Ruger again and ask to speak to a higher up.
Also welcome to the forum.
