Question Longer magazine release for MkIII 22/45

Is there any difference in the exposed length of any of the magazine release buttons on different Mark I,II,II models that might interchange?
I ground off my fixed grips on my MkIII 22/45 and installed 1911 grips but the added thickness makes it hard to hit the mag release.
I have read posts that mention different exposed lengths on the thumb safety so I wondered if the same might be true for the mag release?
Mine is blue, but a SS one would be nice.

Thanks,

Jim

The magazine release on the MK 1 and MK 11 is a latch at the bottom of the grip and magazine, not a button up on the grip as in the MK III. One of the changes to the MK III was to move the mag release up on the grip, a la a 1911. It's the one change I do like on an MK III. This also the reason MK III magazines are different than MK I and MK II magazines. Sorry, might have to take some wood off those grips.

Thanks for that info. So do you think all the models of the MkIIIs have the same exposed length on the mag release buttons? The wood grips are not interfering with the mag release functioning. But it would just be easier to reach from the shooting hold if the release button was a bit longer.

Wait.. Don't go removing any wood. Since you have the 22/45 Mark III, I'd venture to guess that this is what you need: Majestic Arms Extended Mag Release Ruger 22/45 SS

It's a little pricey, but should work.

I've got Hogue grips on my 22/45 Mark III and haven't had an issue hitting the release. Are you using actual 1911 grips or 22/45 grips? (I know both will work, but 1911 grips are slightly different and might be causing the hiccup).

I won't be removing any wood......The wood grips are not interfering with the mag release functioning. But it would just be easier to reach from the shooting hold if the release button was a bit longer. I have seen the Majestic Arms button, just didn't want to pay $30+ so I was hoping that Ruger made two sizes like they do for the thumb safety. I am using actual 1911 grips.

This site has the Majestic, and other cool stuff, for a bit less than Midway.

I know you've already got the grips, but as an FYI there are also 1911 grips with thumb reliefs already incorporated to make operating the mag release easier.

For example, this one from VZ Grips:

I have the Majestic Arms extended magazine release installed on my MKIII Competition and absolutely love it! It took all of 5 minutes to install. I replaced the standard thumbrest grips on my Competition with ambidextrous Hogue checkered cocobolo grips from the Ruger website, but the standard mag release was still a PITA. The Majestic Arms release makes the button very prominent and VERY easy to reach!

I also have the Majestic Arms one but I have no idea how to install it.
Google has not been my friend. (It has been my friend in finding this thread within the Forum, where I would have ended up anyway.)
Any help or pointers would be greatly appreciated.

Somebody helped me with the same problem. Click on the following link, then scroll down to the photo of the pistol for the instructions. You'll probably also want to read my post immediately following the post containing the photo before you get started.

Thanks a lot BOPMan for the link and the thread with explanations.
I understand your frustrations.
I'll try installing that longer mag release button this evening after work.
Take Care

Sorry, NO.
The illustration you have is of a Mark III. Mine is a Mark III 22/45 (1911 grip-style). Next to the magazine release button there is NO Magazine Release hold-down screw at all.
