MKIII Competition Target, which red dot?

Comes with weaver base. Haven't had it mounted. If I have the weaver base on , without any red dot or other optics, does it intefer with seeing the original sights?

What red dots fit on a weaver base? Want to try bullseye shooting, have a cross dominance problem (left hand, right eye)

Thanks,
Patsy

If there is no scope on, it does not interfere with the original sights. I am searching for a red dot to put on my 22/45.

I balanced the Weaver base on the barrel and could see the sights just fine. I'd like to have the option to switch between iron sights and red dot. I understand there may be different kinds of rings that might allow removal and reinstalling of a red dot without having to re-zero it?

I just purchased a Primary Arms Mini-Reflex Green Dot myself a couple weeks ago.

My review: (originally posted at CarolinaShootersForum.com - Powered by vBulletin)

Quote:
A couple weeks ago I broke down and purchased a new reflex sight for my 22/45. I have been using a BSA for awhile and while it's served me well, it was bigger than I wanted and lets face it, the quality of BSA optics generally leaves something to be desired.

So after having used an M3 for awhile on a 10/22, and playing around with a Microdot owned by another forum member, I naturally went with Primary Arms.

When I first decided to go with the Mini-Reflex, of course he was sold out, so when they came back in stock recently I jumped.

Received it within 3 days of order. Packaged nicely with adjustment screwdriver, allen wrench for base removal/battery change, and spare battery. Uses common CR2032 coin batteries.

With the supplied mounting base it mounts easily to weaver/picatinny rails. Fits nicely in the rear most slot on the factory rail for my 22/45. Thumb screw mount is slotted for a screwdriver for tightening.

The lone silver screw you see on top is the elevation adjustment. There is a matching adjustment screw for windage on the right. The two silver screws you see on the rear of the unit lock the windage and elevation adjustments in place. You must loosen these first before making any adjustments. Nice feature IMO.

The two allen screws you see on top of the unit are the screws that remove the sight from the mount and allow you to replace the battery. Sight must be removed from mount to access.

Right side view:

Left side view:

.....along with targets shot today. The lower target has 20 rounds through it. The upper target has 80 rounds through it. both shot at 10 yards.

You can also see the dot in this picture. Nice crisp dot. Shows up well in bright sunlight and low light. The sight has a light sensor in the front that detects lighting levels and automatically turns on/off and adjusts brightness.

Another pic of the dot downrange.

You cannot turn this sight on/off manually. You must put the cover on the sight which turns it off once it goes into full-dark.

And it has to be DARK for it to turn off. Even in my bathroom with no windows and no light source it takes it a minute to shut down.

Battery life is rated at 1000 hours.

So far I'm happy for $74.99 plus shipping. We'll see how it does at Ruger Rimfire this weekend at Caswell Ranch.
Incidently, I won the Ruger Rimfire Series match last weekend with it.

Then I went and made a holster for it:

thanks for the review. I see that the Minireflex seems to lock on the Weaver mount with a screw. If you remove the minireflex (for battery change or to shoot iron sights) is it still zeroed when put back on?

Patsy,

I haven't had it long enough to find out honestly. I'm going shooting tomorrow with it so I'll take it off tonight and put it back on, shoot, and update.

Tom

UPDATE: yes it does return to zero. At least to the 25 yds I typically shoot it.

I'm going today to buy an Ultradot Matchdot to join bulls-eye competition this fall with my husband. I'm guessing I can install the included weaver mount myself? When I remove the included screws from the barrel, should I clean the holes with anything before installing the mount and using a loc-tite product? Finally, is there any reason I should not use the included weaver mount and buy a different type?
Thanks,
Patsy

Clean the holes out with alcohol, and use blue loc-tite. The included rail is fine.
