Ruger MK II one-piece vs. three-piece mainspring housing?

Hello, All,

Does anyone know when Ruger went from the three-piece to the one-piece mainspring housings (and, when they switched back to three-piece housings?) Any serial number ranges? I recently acquired a late 2000 production Competition Target Model (224-prefix) and it came with a one-piece mainspring housing; yet I have several other MK IIs that were produced slightly earlier, and slightly later, and they have the three-piece housings. I'd love to have someone with some real depth of knowledge on this share what they know. I know that sometime in the early '90s, Ruger told Chad Hiddleson that they were going to switch-over to all one-piece cast housings...but it is obvious that they abandoned one-piece housings at some point. Any information on this? Thanks,

Jim (kean57)

With zero knowledge, it may be that your pistols are from the transition time. Ruger would have switched to the one piece housing but still had some stock of the earlier three piece housings to use up until gone. The later pistols may have some of those left over housings.

If so, then the serial number dates will give a range of dates when the switch was made.
