Ruger MK I,II,III Dovetail/Sights

Hey everyone, Does anyone know the specs on Ruger MK series Dovetails for the rear sight? To make a long story short, A friend of mine got a MKIII that literally didn't come with a dovetail for the rear sight. I told him I'd do a little research to find out what kind of dovetail it needs to fit Ruger MKIII rear sights, but I can't find info anywhere. Someone said it has a 65 degree 0.330" dovetail, but that don't sound right. I measured a rear sight that I ordered for him and it's nowhere near .330". At the bottom it measures 0.550" and is 0.500" just above that (not sure about the angle or how to measure it. I'm hoping to get the info, so I can find the right dovetail cutter for him (he has a milling machine).

Anyone know the dovetail specs on these or what cutter's needed to cut the dovetail or how deep it should be?

Dovetail Specs.bmp
(here's some dimensions I took from the rear sight I measured.)

Thanks.

The easiest thing to do is to call Ruger and have them take it back. They will repair or replace the barrel/receiver.

The 0.330" 65 degree dovetail is pretty standard for front sights that use a dovetail - not rear sights.

0.495" 65 degree is the standard cutter for 0.500" rear sights.

I measured my MKII standard (fixed sight) and the base is 0.5665" 65 degrees (my calipers have 0.0005" resolution). I'm guessing the sharp point to sharp point measurement of the sight is 0.570" pressed into a 0.565" notch.

Guessing the correct size (expensive) cutter, and milling on a receiver, while having no previous dovetail experience sounds like a pretty bad idea to me.

My choices to get it done would be:

1) Ruger
2) Novak (they make most of Ruger's sights)
3) A gunsmith that has done this mod before (with references)

Ruger may well even do it for free, minus shipping. I'd call their CS and ask what they will do for you.

I agree, don't even mess with it. Send it back to Ruger you will have it back in probably less than 2 week's.

When you send the gun to Ruger they may decide to just replace the gun with a new one. That would probably be a MK IV as they don't make the MK III anymore. It's worth a shot.
