MKIV bolt not staying open

Any ideas why the Bolt won't stay open when the mag is empty? It doesn't happen all of the time but I'd say 3 out of times. Are the MKIII and MKIV mags exactly the same? I might have accidentally picked up my father's MKIII mag when we were shooting together.

The mags should be identical.

MKIII mags are the ones that fit the MkIV

I shot about 50 rounds since the gun was last cleaned. I cleaned and oiled after this session. I'll see what happens next time I go out. Thanks for the help

Suggest you take a number of MKIII/MKIV mags and test each. See if the problem is just with a specific mag(s) or with every mag. Lets you know if you have a mag problem or a pistol problem.

BTW, welcome to the forum.

Not saying this is your problem but it was mine, the slide release button/lever was mis-bent on mine and dragging on the grip or frame. When I finally figured out what was going on I removed it to try to bend it out just a tad and that little bastard broke right off! I had to order a new one so I got the extended one from Volquartsen and with it installed my failure to lock open stopped and I have 2 mark IV mags and 1 mark III mag

It could just be a timing thing because your springs are still tight. I would stick with ammo rated 1200+ fps for a few hundred rounds. After the springs break in, your problem may well be gone with SV ammo too.

Hopefully that's it. Next time I'm going to pay attention to what mag is in when it happens. I was using Federal Auto match

I just had the same problem when shooting Blazers. It works perfect with CCI Mini Mags though and with my Federal Auto Match.

I'm having the same issue with the bolt not staying open after the last shot. I picked up 3 additional mags (2 from Buds, 1 from TK) and this happens with all of them and the factory mags. It might stay open 1-2 times out of 5, but doesn't appear to make a difference which mag I use.

I've probably put 600-800 rounds through it. I've read it could be a mag issue, but this is first I read about a slide release bolt/lever being bent. I'm looking at mine now, can't tell if anything is bent. I'm going to give Ruger a call tomorrow.

Also should note I've used Federal, Remington, Aguila and CCI. Seems to like CCI and Remington the most, Federal decent and didn't like Aguila at all. This is in terms of jams/FTE's. No difference in bolt staying open between ammo.

A few range sessions later with some different ammo and I have some positive updates. All of the initial ammo I was putting through it was standard velocity. I picked up some high velocity Federal and CCI and what a difference! I put about 250 rounds down range and the bolt stayed up after last shot every single time. I think I had 1 FTE and maybe 2-3 FTF.

That was a fun range session! I've picked up some extra mags from a few sites and all performed well. High velocity ammo from here on out.

Most of my Mark III pistols (I own 7) have this problem with any of my 20 or so Mark III magazines. I have given up on this issue and learned to live with the notion that I must count my shots and eject after round 10. Once in a while one of my Marks will lock back after round ten, but rarely.

I have tried lubing the slide lock lever and ensuring that it is not hanging up on something. No luck.

The odd thing is that if I rack the slide on an empty magazine it will lock back. Danged if I know why it won't lock back on the last round, given this fact.

Nature of the beast?
