I have a standard MKIII target 5 1/5 bull barrel. I got it new a few months ago. For fun I decided to look up the serial number on the website. The site shows a prefix of 227 for MKIIIs, 229 for MKIII hunters, 228 for 22/45 MKIIIs and 270-18317 for 22/45 MKIII hunters. Mine is 270-3xxxx. There is no MKIII with that sequence on the page. I would think all like mine would have the same prefix. Anyone else notice that?
jmb3675, The serial number history shows the starting serial number for each year. When the serial number reaches XXX-99999, a new prefix is assigned that may or may not be sequential. In this case, Ruger started at 227-98588 at the beginning of 2009. Soon after they ran out of numbers and started the new prefix of 270. Check back in a few months and they will have it updated to Jan 2010.
If you bought the gun new, it should have been shipped with a spent case in a small envelope. The date on the envelope will be within a few days of manufacture.
Thanks. Looking at it now it should have been obvious they would have run out of numbers. Although I would have figured they would have kept the trend of each model having its own prefix.
