Mark III Scope

I recently bought a Mk III competition model and I would like to add a scope. I use it for target shooting only. Will this scope work? BSA RD30/22SIL or can you suggest something that will or may be a better choice. I would like to keep the cost down, but I don't want to waist my money on junk. I'm new to the shooting sport and have been overwhelmed by the choices. I am also confused by what will fit on the pistol. I have the weaver scope base adapter but I’m not sure what else I may need to mount the scope.
Thanks in advance for your help, I really am enjoying this hobby. I only wish I had found it sooner.

Jim

cart1775, Yes, the BSA Red Dot will work on your MK III. There are better choices but of course they cost more. I really like the Millett Red Dots. I have one on my MK III and another on my 7" S&W Mod 41. They have much brighter dots which really helps when shooting in bright sunlight and especially over snow. Millet Red Dots come in both 1" and 30mm tubes, silver and black. I got the 1" black SP-1 with a 3 MOA dot. I also have a BSA that is currently on an air rifle because it broke after 3 rounds on my MK III (now repaired). Both red dots have 11 brightness settings so to give you an idea .... my Millett is about the same dot brightness on "6" as the BSA on the highest setting, "11". The Millett is much smaller so the gun doesn't look like a bear riding a tricycle like it did with the 30mm BSA. I bought the Millett through Midway USA for well under $100, Weaver style mounts included but I didn't use them

I got the 1" Ruger steel rings and Ruger steel base for my MK III. I bought a 2X conventional pistol scope and an extra set of rings so I can swap from red dot to 2X scope without losing zero or leave them off and use iron sights. It's a great combination.

Here's my MK III with the 2X scope:

Here the same gun only with the Millett SP-1. This picture was taken before I switched to the Ruger steel rings and base.

Jim ... Welcome to the wonderful world of shooting sports and congrats on your new MKIII. In answer to your questions:

1. At $40, the BSA is certainly an OK red dot to start with, though you will likely want to update it in the not to distant future as you progress in distance and accuracy.

2. My favorite scope for my MKIII512 is the Nikon Monach/Titanium 2 x 20 with extended eye relief. While it was a little over $150 when I bought it a while back, it is very stable and very comfortable to shoot. The target below is at 25 yards off of a sand bag (indoor range) this past week.

Good luck with your decision.

Thanks for the information. I checked out the scopes that were mentioned and the price is within my budget. I think spending a little more is worth the difference in quality. Thanks for taking the time to help a newbie. I hope I can do the same sometime in the future.

What kind of grips are those, and where did you get them?

Squirrel Assassin, Those are Hogue wraparounds. Pretty inexpensive ($25) and they fit me like a glove.

I went their website, and I didn't see those for the MK III! Only for the MKII.

Squirrel Assassin, The MK II grips I bought are identical to MK III grips except for a slight divot for the magazine release.

I liked the way the Millet sits low on the pistol, so i ordered one. it came in today. Iowegan, the one i received is unusable. The "red dot" is really a huge (much bigger than 3 MOA I think) starburst worthless splattering. I'm hoping OpticsPlanet makes this right for me.

Just thought i'd let all know that there may be problems with this sight.

... squirrel season is merely days away. what else can go wrong?!?

Have you used your pistol this season for hunting?

SquirrelAssasin, no. not yet. I just got my 2x20 scope mounted on it but i've been spending my range time sighting in with my lever action .22 rimfire, my main-man squirrel hunting weapon (along with my early season shotgun).

If i guess right, i'll be sighting it in this week and it will be ready to carry soon after. One small opportunity is that at the range i use, you can only use pistols on the "Pistol Range" which has only one target distance of 15 yards. I was really hoping to be able to at least see what kind of accuracy i can attain at say 25-30 yards but we'll see. I should be able to tell a lot even from that range.

How's your season going?
