Ruger P90 Failure - Slide Movement

Have a P90 with a problem. Bought it used in the late 90's and never had any issues with it before. At my last range session a few days ago I inserted a magazine and attempted to rack the slide to load a round; however, although the slide will move back it stops an inch or so short.........it will not retract enough to strip a round from the magazine nor far enough to remove the slide stop in order to remove the slide. I had cleaned it the weekend previous and reassembled it and function checked it and don't remember any issues at that time. I took the grips off and don't see any problems with the ejector or the trigger bar spring so I assume the problem has something to do with the guide rod being off or out of place, maybe because the guide rod spring has gotten a little weak? Anyone seen this problem before? Any ideas on how to get it apart?

First, welcome to the forum! Next: Out of curiosity, when you let the slide go all the way forward, does the recoil spring guide rod tend to stick out under the muzzle...like, noticeably? I ask because I had that happen to me with my P-90, and found that it was remedied by simply taking the spring off the guide rod and putting it back on, opposite of how it was before. I'm wondering if this might be related. If that's not it [and that was, admittedly, a stab in the dark], I'd next try a new spring. If THAT doesn't work...if it were mine, I'd send it in to Ruger.

No, the recoil rod wasn't/isn't sticking out with the slide forward......but I gotta get this thing apart before I can change springs. Anyone have any expirence with the stronger wolf recoil springs? I see Midway has then from 11-14lbs?

I've never seen this happen, at least, not with my P-90. If you can't get it apart, I'd go ahead & let a gunsmith look at it, or else, send it back to Ruger. Good luck; let us know how it goes.

Is the wide part of the recoil spring toward the muzzle? The recoils spring has a wide end and a slim end,the wide end should be towrd the muzzle. If it is not then the spring will wedge between the slide and the guide rod.You will have to push down the ejector and pull the slide stop lever to force the slide off...

Factory ammunition or reloads? If reloads, it may be as simple as an out-of-spec round stuck in the chamber. In fact, that can happen with factory too, it's just far less likely.

Both our KP90s like bullets no larger than .451". .452" will work, but they tend to stick in the chamber. I found that if I load a .452" bullet in a military case (thicker brass) the rounds would stick in there pretty tight.

That was it, the recoil spring was in backwards. I racked the slide back as far as it would go, which was a little more than half way, then whacked the extended rod end with a rubber mallet a few times. After letting the slide forward it would then come back all the way so I could remove the slide stop and then the slide...............turned the spring around and not it's fine. Thanks for the help.
