best self defense rounds LC9

I'm new to this forum and handgun ownership in general. I've started shooting blazer brass through my lc9 at the range. It works great. I'm going to start doing some testing of hollowpoint rounds through my gun to see how they work too. The problem is, I don't know where to start. What are the best self defense rounds that you recommend to run through an LC9?

I have used Federal Hydra-shok, and Hornady Critical Defense. I stuck with the Hornady simply because you get 25 rounds instead of 20. WELCOME

Welcome to the forum from Mid Missouri ..

You made a good choice in the LC9 I have carried mine for a couple years now love the size and the way it shoots , easy to conceal. I have tried both Federal Hydra-shok, and Hornady Critical Defense and both work fine , right now I'm using MagTech ...

Good luck

The Hornady Critical Defense work well as a defensive load.
They use blended powders for low flash. The FTX bullets used in the load are known to expand reliably.

tbk3191, Welcome to the forum and congratulations on your new pistol.

In addition to the above suggestions, I've found that in 9mm, short barrel pistols, Speer Gold Dots, and Federal HST 124gr perform well and rate highly in "stopping power" i.e. ballistic results.

Of course these are all self defense Jacketed Hollowpoint (JHP) expansion type rounds, which is what you want to carry. However, they're all expensive rounds. So, I highly recommend you stop at Wallmart and purchase a couple of boxes of 100 round, bulk packed, "practice" ammo. Either Winchester White Box (WWB) or Federal FMJ would be fine. And, a box of a hundred is only a few bucks more than a box of 20 of the aforementioned "self defense" ammo. In fact, in the case of the Federal Bulk Pack, maybe a few bucks cheaper. (As of this month, a box of 100 WWB is $22,97 and a box of100 of Federal FMJ is $19.97)

Now, after you've practiced with the "cheap stuff" and you're ready to load 'er up with your carry ammo i suggest the following:

Buy a box of whichever JHP you decide on, Shoot a full magazine of those to familiarize yourself with the extra punch and more importantly, to insure they function perfectly in your LC9. Then, from the same box, load up you carry mag.(s) And you're good to go.

Good luck with your new shooter. We'll be looking for a "Range Report".

I recommend you shoot more than one magazine of your chosen defense ammo. In an LC9 that's only seven rounds, huh? I know they're expensive, but this is your LIFE you're puttin' on the line, Son. I'd shoot at least the whole box o' 20 or 25.

And my favorite carry load, Remington's Golden Saber 147-grain, is on sale now on several web sites at about $13 a box. They come in 124-grain standard and +P, too, if you're so inclined. My FBI buds tell me it's good stuff.

And change out your carry load for fresh ammo occasionally, too, maybe once a year. A few bucks ain't worth takin' a chance.

+1 on the Critical Defense ammo, it is made to be efficient in short barrels, Hydra-Shok is also good. For range use i have shot everything from 95 gr. to 147 gr. and every type from cast to JHP in the lc9 and SR9 and have yet to find a combination that they didn't like. They seem to nun good on anything within reason.
