Sounds like a 70 series is the way to go. I keep hearing good things about the SR1911 but I still think I'm going to spend the $ for the Colt. I made a promise to myself that when I get promoted I'm going to buy a Colt. So if Obama get's in it will be a LE6940, if Romney gets in it will be a 1911.

I almost bought the Gold Cup instead!
You can't go wrong with a Colt. They made the first ones and always made fine firearms.

Right after I got my first SR1911, there was a couple of guys next to me at the range. I asked if they had seen the new Ruger, and showed what I had. Well, one of the guys next to me at the range gave me the 'ol "if it ain't got Colt on it, it ain't a real 1911" response. We got to shooting, and it wasn't long he asked me what I had done to the Ruger. I don't think I made any friends when I told him I took it out of the box. I wasn't being mean, I was being honest, I still haven't changed anything on that gun.
I have two Colts, a Kimber, and my Rugers. My EDC is a Ruger SR1911.
I absolutely love that gun, it is the most accurate, best looking, all-the-features-you-want-and-none-you-don't-want 1911 for the money out there. And it's made in America.

I have an SR1911 and a Magnum Research DE1911G. Both Series 70. One made in America and the other in Israel. The perfect pair. They will stay with me until the day they are inherited.

The wife has a Armscor (Rock Island Armory) 1911 Compact tactical. It's one for the most accurate and best shooting handguns we have. But we will have an SR1911 someday. Mainly because I've been sayin' for 40 years "man, I wish Ruger would build a 1911".
