| A couple of (newbie) questions about my SR9
Hi all....just picked up my SR9 today! Won't get to shoot it until Sunday
So I disassembled, cleaned and reassembled it and have been running some snap caps thru it.
A couple of questions. I'm getting a lot of jams with the snap caps...is that normal just because of having to eject each round by hand?
Also, with the action open, there is a considerable amount of wiggle to the actual barrel. Is that normal?

I wouldn't be troubled at either of those observations, wait until you've actually shot it to see the difference. As long as you followed the directions when you disassembled and reassembled your pistol you should be just fine. I am very impressed with my SR9 and hope that your's will please you as well.

Hi for what its worth you dont need snap caps to dry fire an Sr9 ,its fine to dry fire most striker pistols ....the manual you would have got with the pistol will also verify this on page 17...the play/wiggle in the barrel when the action is open is normal mine has the same...cheers hope this helps.KIWI

i have your sr9's somewhat poorer cousin, the P95, but from what i've gathered the wiggle is typical with either of them when the action is open.

Wouldn't that require more than a field strip? I'm probably not qualified to do that....
I got all the nooks and crannies I could with patches and q tips and got off a good bit of grease.

It sounds like it's clean enough to go out and shoot with. I wouldn't recommend cleaning out the striker channel without a more experienced buddy on hand. But it needs to be done. You will feel a difference in the trigger. Also like mentioned above the barrel wiggle is normal when the action is open. Enjoy your new SR9, you're going to love shooting it. Let us know how she does. |

Be sure to have a magazine in the gun (empty of course) when dry-firing, as the manual states. Otherwise it will damage the striker assembly.
This link has great SR9 disassembly info. RugerForum.com • View topic - SR9 How-To (Multiple Inside) Updated 4/5/09 W/ Videos!
I would ignore the 'Magazine Disconnect' removal portion of the link. Don't know if your familiar with the Mag DC or not but a lot of people remove them. I would suggest leaving it in, just my opinion.

Reason: Added Mag DC info

It is relatively easy to clean the striker channel.....Youtube the procedure to take out the striker and MAKE SURE when you put the striker back in that the flat spot on the spring cup faces down. Congratulations on being a new SR9 owner. It will be my second time to the range with this gun since I got it back from Ruger, going tomorrow. Hope all goes well.

When you write " flat spot on the spring cup faces down", do you mean the flat spot is toward the frame when the slide is installed? Apologies for being obtuse, but when I re-insert the striker the slide is, of course, upside down so I can work easily.
Thanks.
