P89 Decock issue/question, advise please.

Not sure how to or if I can delete this thread. I feel like an idiot, I just realized I wasn't letting the slide go back far enough or hard enough to bring the hammer back down.

I'm new to this forum and joined specifically to ask this question, hope you guys can help.

I recently purchased a used P89, I love this gun, have shot it before and was specifically looking for it when I bought it, so I know a little something about how it works.

Today I removed the take down lever completely in order to clean up some faded blueing. When I went to put it back, the trigger popped out and I was able to put it back. I never noticed anything else shifting or moving around.

Now when I rack the slide back, the hammer cocks in both safe and fire (white and red dot) positions. Also, when I rack the slide back in safe mode, if I pull the trigger with the decock lever in safe mode, the hammer drops just as if I were using the decock lever. It will not fire because I checked that the firing pin is still blocked. But after that, still in safe, the trigger is disengaged. Otherwise, the decock lever works as it should.

For the life of me, I can't remember if this was the case before I removed the lever today. I never noticed whether the trigger engaged the same way or not. Does anyone have any idea if this is normal or if I went and messed something up?

Don't worry about it. Someone else might have the same "problem" and this might serve to help them out. There's no one here that hasn't done something similar in the past.

Hi Joe333
I just took my P89 out of the safe and checked it. It works the same way yours works. What I don't under stand is why the trigger came out when you removed the slide. I just checked my manual as I don't use my P89 much anymore. Do not remove the take down pin fully only out enough to let the slide come off. Also remember to push the ejector down fully before you start. I broke my down just to see. Hope this helps you
PS welcome to the forum.

jlh820 Thanks for that, you make a good point.

gmsoapy I removed the take down lever to work with the finish on it a bit. The trigger didn't exactly 'drop' out. It worked out while I was trying to put the lever back in, that tiny spring can be tricky. Thanks for checking your P89 for me.

You're welcome. Anytime that's why we belong to the forum to help one another out. PS do you have a manual for your P89 I have a PDF version of it if you need it as it's no longer on Rugers web site I think.
