| New SR9c Owner needing Noob advice
I Bought a ruger sr9c about a week ago. it was used and the previous owner claimed to have taken good care of it and also said that he has put about 200 rounds through it. Once i got it home i broke it down and i got to looking and it looks like it still has the factory grease in it and didnt look real clean so my guess is he has probrobly put closer to 50-100 rounds through it. i did get to take it to the range but i only had time to put one mag through it. i decided on the 17 rd. mag and i had 3 Failure to Ejects. I assumed its because the gun and mag have not been fully broken in or its because it hasnt been properly cleaned.
i was loading and unloading the mags last night to break them in a little better since i wont be able to get a cleaning kit unlil this weekend and i noticed that every time i go to unload the mag with my thumb about every third round or so catches the outside lip and i have to push up and the tip and then it will pop out. is this normal or because it isnt fully broken in?
i am also wanting to know about light/laser combo's as i have very bad eye sight and will be using my sr9c as a home defense and well once those contacts come out and the glasses go on i will definatly need some help. i would like to know if you can double stack them or if you can mount a light on a crimson trace or if you have to buy a combo one?
i am also interested in any other mods/ accessories you reccomend.
Sorry for the lengthy post but better to have one long post then 14 one liners.
If this is in the wrong place feel free to move it to the right place.
Thanks in advance, Outlaw

When I unload a mag with my thumb that always happens. It won’t when you shoot. Also once you’ve loaded a magazine, rap the back of it against the palm of your hand to seat all the bullets to the back. I now have somewhere around 3000 rounds through my sr9c without an issue, it anything it just gets better.

i am also interested in any other mods/ accessories you reccomend. | i have a P95 and have some similar questions. can't answer your question with any authority BUT two things as far as 'our' questions go:
1) there's another thread going this morning about crimson trace that you might want to dig up. i learned a good bit just from reading it.
2) earlier this morning i was watching guns and gear or gun talk (can't remember which), and they had a guy on from the laserlyte company. they had a pretty cool looking laser sight that mounts on the side (in fact, i believe they were demo-ing it on an sr9), and is really small and slim. pretty nifty looking.
as i said i don't know much of anything about either, but maybe some more folks will chime in and have definitive thoughts one way or the way other about either crimson trace or laserlyte.

I have the Crimson Trace on my SR9c and love it. Turning it on is intuitive since the switch is on the handgrip. You don't even think about it. In fact, you have to alter your grip to make it not turn on. It's easy to adjust and the lens is easy to clean if needed. Crimson Trace also supplies a yearly battery for free if you register with them. I bought mine with the gun so it was only around $120 above the going price of the gun at the time.
I really like that it's directly below the barrel and not offest like some. I also like the fact that you don't even have to think about turning a switch off and on. Hate to admit it but I'm more accurate at 20 ft with the laser than I am with the sights alone but I'm getting better. Can easily punch the center out of a target now!
I've had no problems whatsoever with FTF or FTE with the SR9c. I've got around 1500 round through it with assorted ammo including Herters FNJ, WWB, and other economy brands.

Couple tips I've picked up from different places. Load the mags and lock back the slide, store them like that for a few days/week. Cleaning is essential to get factory lube out. Limp wristing when shooting will give you issues with most semi-automatics. After the first two magazines, I've had zero issues. Good luck, extremely satisfied with mine.

Rebel, I would recommend tearing that gun down as far as you are able, and give it a thorough cleaning. Look into what type of lube suits you best, I recommend a "bake" of parts in Frog Lube.
It is quite common for rounds to "tip down" when being pushed out manually, and as long as it feeds properly when in the gun it is nothing to worry about.
Crimson Trace is a very respectable company, making quality products that they stand behind. Laserlyte however, does not have the same reputation. I personally have had very bad experiences with their products, and know a host of others that have also. These problems include poor switches, horrible mounting designs, and adjustment systems that are sorely lacking in the user-friendly department. Choose wisely.
I personally am quite over the laser "fad" now, as I saw watching the laser was taking over years and years of training to watch my target and front sight.

As far as the FTF and FTE, I had similar trouble when I first bought my sr9c. I lost alot of faith in the gun since every few rounds, the round would hang up and the slide wouldnt go all the way back into battery. But I contacted Ruger and they paid for shipping to and from. They gave me a note saying that they repaired the extractor. Since then, I haven't had a single problem and my faith in the gun is restored.
I'd recommend a good cleaning and lube job, but if that still doesnt do it. Call ruger. They'll set you up.
Sorry, dont have much experience with lights or lasers though.

Hey Rebel Outlaw, as others have stated, give it a good cleaning. I dont have a link, but look on ruger.com. Choose the SR9 and theres a tab up top called extras. Click and choose the disassembly, and within there is a video on how to remove the striker. Mine was pretty gooey. Easier than I thought to do. Hope this helps. Ron

I have an SR40c which is the same pistol except chambered for 40 S&W.
All the advice here about cleaning is right on the money.
I have tried two lasers for the pistol and I recommend the Crimson Trace Rail Master. A very close runner-up would be the Lasermax Uni-max Micro. Here is the page on Amazon.com. My review is the first one. Crimson Trace Rail Master Universal Mount Laser: Amazon.com: Sports & Outdoors |

It's really good to read about your SR9c, it and the SR40c are near perfect in size and performance for a CCW. One of the best thing's that can happen in firearms ownership is finding a near new used pistol. I'll jump all over any chance to make a purchase like that and save a few dollars in doing so. If it make's you feel any better the SR9 I recently purchased has really impressed me with how well it shoot's. Get out and shoot your SR9c as soon as you get a chance to do so and enjoy yourself.

I agree with everything that's been said. I own, 10 pistols of a variety of makes and models, all bought new, and the SR9c was the most gunked up one I've ever broken down.
It was really, really heavily lubed with some kind of very sticky substance, including in the striker channel. There are videos on removing the striker for cleaning it, and its channel, so don't be intimidated!
