P95 Recoil Spring Broke

so the other day I went to clean my p95 and when I took off the slide the recoil springs came off of the rod completely. I shook the slide and the recoil spring collar came out. I was able to get the springs back on the rod and re attach the collar, and it now stays in place and I was able to reassemble the gun. I know I am a bit of a newbie, but I'm pretty sure this is not supposed to happen. I have cycled the gun a few times with snap caps and have successfully racked the slide and dry fired it several times. Am I risking anything by firing the gun at the range again or should i send it back to Ruger first?

I wouldnt send it back, if its a new gun, just call CS and they should send you a new spring assembly, if its used or you've had it for a while, you can just order a new one.

This is from the Ruger parts online.

V06203 Recoil Spring Collar Retainer - P93, P95
$2.00

V06103 Recoil Spring Collar - P93, P95
$2.50

Sure cheaper than buying the whole assembly and sounds like all you need.

I had the same problem. A new $2 collar retainer fixed it!

Not a uncommon thing to happen and if I remember right the gun will work without it? Trying calling Ruger.......................it's an even bet that they will send you a new one for free. Their extremely good in doing that

My retainer came off years ago. Just went without it. Makes reassembly a bit harder but, most of my pistols have no retainer, so this just made one more. Finally, after reading similar post on-line, I broke down and paid 2 bucks for a new retainer. Don't really need it, but it's nice to have.

I have found that the recoil spring retainer is unnecessary and the gun will function perfectly without it. Also they don't always seem to stay on very well, it seems to be the number 1 part that gets lost because they have a tendency to come loose in go flying across the room under spring power during field strip. It does however make reassembly much much easier and is a very cheap part replace so I actually would recommend getting a new one. Calling Ruger sounds like a good idea. Who knows, maybe they will send you a free one.

To maybe clarify things. You need the collar in there so the spring length is proper. The gun may still function without the collar but I wouldn't shoot mine without it. Now the retainer clip you don't need.

Also the collar has a front and a back. One side is "cut" out so it goes over the clip if the clip is installed.

Good luck,

My came off when I let the guide slip when putting it back together after cleaning. I called Ruger and they sent me a couple free.

I must come across as a d!ck on the phone or something, I never get free stuff from Ruger.

When I order stuff they may toss in a sticker but that is it.

I really do try to be nice on the phone too.

My retaining ring kept popping off the collar and I got sick of fixing it, so I called Ruger CS and explained the situation...they sent me 2 retaining rings for free.
