My old dog was on the porch and the coyote was stalking her. I scooped up the dog, put her inside, and grabbed the closest gun & flashlight.

Last night the SR22 was the closest. I am planning on being ready for the next coyote sighting. My weapon options are SR22 or sr9c. I am fearful of shooting a 9mm because of the surrounding houses. The .22lr may not down the coyote.

Which would you pick and why?
There are many ? to ask here. I live in St. Louis county, it's illegal to discharge any firearm(even pellet guns). Is your county the same?
That .22 with a slight up angle will travel 3/4 of a mile. You better be a good shot! I'm for the animal control route in this instance, if that applies to your county. You pay the taxes, let them do there job. Now, if it's real life/limb time & there is no safe way out, plug the fur ball, but keep in mind, that projectile will travel till it hits something & it does not discriminate. a coyote is not worth getting in legal trouble over. If you have to shoot to scare them away, the shot shells are good advice also.

+1 Pretty quite and if not kill 'em, it'll make him run.

Just thought of this. Don't let your dog outside for any reason. If you see the Coyote coming back, set a leg trap with a nice bit of meat under it. Once caught, call animal control. I'd check with the local laws first.

We've got a growing "urban" coyote problem in the Portland, Oregon area, as well, but here they generally stick to the forested areas (Portland has a LOT of heavily wooded parks) and are rarely (for their population) seen by people. From the information provided by MNDoggie, the coyotes in the Midwest aren't nearly as shy - maybe ours will get that bold, eventually.

I don't have any problem shooting coyotes - my only suggestion is that Danger check to be sure it is LEGAL to shoot in his neighborhood. If it is, then blaze away! My favorite "medicine" for curious coyotes near the house is a shotgun with a turkey load (again, only where it is LEGAL to shoot), although I seem to recall that some companies make a special "coyote load"; not sure what the shot size is in that one.

In most areas around here, discharging a firearm is just as "illegal" as using a leg trap.....

Consider the fact that walking around at 11PM with a firearm, may get you shot instead of the coyote.

Let's address the questions-

The larger issue that I did not mention is that seeing coyotes around my house is not completely uncommon. Most keep their distance from the houses. This specific one was within 30 feet of me (6'5" 220lbs) prior to me noticing and didn't seem to fear me as I began running to my door.

I have small children, so you better bet I'm not going to take a gutsy coyote lightly. That said, if I see it again, it is DEAD. My only question is will it die on the spot (9mm) or run off and slowly bleed to death/die from infection (.22LR).

I live outside of city limits and depending on where I stand, the closest house is not within 100 yards. My front yard is over an acre and the rear is much larger. My neighbors have shot animals in their yards in the past (there is only 1 easy way to get a skunk out of a live trap).

Leg snares are out of the question. Too many pets and kids around. I don't plan on putting on a concert for it either.

Also, I am not concerned with having a legality of discharging a firearm debate on here. I'll take that up with my local PD.

Danger, thanks for the update.

On another issue you brought up, my LEO neighbor let me know how they terminate skunks in their traps. The traps they use [and I modified mine] don't let the skunk see the person. There is just a small area where you can see into the trap area and confirm that it is a skunk...smell usually works, too. They take the blue tarp covered trap to a small pond and drop it in. I used a 50 gallon plastic barrel full of water. I took less than 20 seconds for a mimimal struggle to stop.

Buy a 22 and a supressor. I just bought one $350 (plus the $200 tax)

A supressor is absolutely useless in this situation. I am not concerned about anyone (inluding LEO) hearing or seeing me fire a weapon in my yard. I doubt anyone would care if I shoot a coyote as many have small children also. If they did care, I doubt they would voice their opinion seeing as my 2nd amendment rights are a bit more intimidating than their 1st amendment rights.

Congrats on the supressor purchase anyway. I hope you are happy.
On a personal note, I like to hear my gun go bang, which is way I bought it.

Seems a little slow to me and isn't the water stinky afterwards?

No worse than not gettting a clean shot, which can happen when trying not to get sprayed and the critter is moving around.

No, the water isn't a problem. I have holes drilled near bottom of the barrel. They're coverd with duct tape. I just pull the tape and let it drain.

The LEO who mentioned the method to me says they use the ponds at a local golf course. If the smell was too bad, I don't think the golf course would let them do it.

sorry to have opened that can of worms danger.

I'd use my scoped ar personally best odds of hitting exactly what I am aiming for.

You have pistols i wouldn't trust a 22 pistol to put down anything much bigger than o say 30 lbs unless you get a dead on shot at their brain stem.

the 9 would be the way to go in the event that you do really need to put it down you want it to drop as quick as possible (say if it already has a hold of your dog).

With your concern for the neighbors a 22 and a nine are going to piss them off or wound them just about as much so obviously making sure you have a clean shot and are aware of whats behind the target are very important.
