| New LCP - Question about Inserting Magazine
Just picked up our new LCP from the FFL yesterday. Cleaned it. And now the range bags are packed and ready for a range trip tomorrow. BUT...
While cleaning the LCP and mags, I noticed that the magazine won't insert into the frame of the gun without pressing the mag release button. Is that typical? It's supposed to be that way?

Probably just needs to be used a little. I'm sure after a couple hundred rounds it will clear up and go in a little easier.

Your observation that the magazine can be seated correctly by manually pressing the mag release supports this.
In the other thread you mentioned having 4 magazines. Same problem with all four?
If you unload the gun and look into the magazine well, the magazine catch is easy to see. Check the movement of the catch as you manually work the release, looking for obstructions. Also, though it's difficult to see, the catch body has a slight bevel to assist the magazine in driving the catch away as it's seated.
On the factory mag for my LCP, the magazine first encounters the magazine catch @ about the bottom of the "5" round mark on the magazine. If this is where you're hanging up, the "obstruction" is the magazine catch, and the difficulty is probably just a tight, new spring.

It's more you should never use ProMags. Haha, really though, I've never had a good ProMag and others have never had a bad one.
As far as the mag issue. I just tried mine. I too will get a bit of a hold up after about 1/3 of the mag is inserted. If you lock the slide back and look down from the top, you can see it's getting hung up on the magazine catch. I've never really noticed it much before, but I am also in the habit of tapping it with reasonable force to get them in. I don't really see it as a problem, but it is... different.

Yes, all 5 magazines are Ruger factory original, and they all do the same thing. And yes, it is the magazine catch that is stopping the magazine about half way into the magazine well. However, this only happens with an empty magazine... as experienced during the first cleaning of the gun and mags. At the range, with rounds loaded into the mags, all 5 magazines seat perfectly into the magazine well and perform flawlessly. I can live with that!!
Apparently, the sharp edge of the unloaded magazine catches on the "tight" magazine catch. However, when loaded, the round case of the top round just glides right on past the magazine catch with no problems whatsoever.
So bottom-line, the gun performed quite well at the range. Round count: 150... with way more to come! |
