| SR9C Issues
Hello everyone. I am new to the forums here, and new to the Ruger SR9C. I have had a couple issues with the gun so far and was wondering if anyone else has had similar problems and if you think I should contact Ruger about them.
First issue was immediate at the gun range. I was using PMC bronze (115 grain?) and loaded up both magazines and immediately had many issues with the gun jamming up with stovepipes and other issues. I was bummed out at first but wasn't ready to throw the gun under the bus. I took it home and field stripped it and cleaned all the factory grease out and lubed it up with Hoppes gun lube (I realize I should have done this before I shot it first). Went back to the range the next day and tried Magtech ammo in both 115 and 124 grain. Worked much better but I still had a couple times out of about 150 rounds where the gun would jam. The jury is still out on this one though and I need to take the gun back to the range and give it some more testing to see if this is a real issue or not. I will also try some other ammo, but the Magtech is cheap and seems to work decently.
Second issue, which is of more concern to me, is that when I was field stripping the gun last night to re-clean the barrel I ran into a little problem. I locked the slide back, pushed the take down pin through, pushed the extractor down and pushed the slide forward and it got stuck about an inch forward. I immediately tried to pull back the slide to lock it back and try again but it would not go all the way back and the recoil assembly was stuck about an inch forward still. I had to push the recoil assembly back with some authority to get it to pop back into the slide and was then able to break the gun down. Now I am concerned that there was some damage done because the spring now seems to be bowed out and I don't remember it being like that originally. I am hoping I did not damage it and praying that it won't happen again.
With that said, I LOVE LOVE LOVE this gun! It shoots great and the recoil is incredibly manageable. The trigger feels great and the gun feels amazing in general. I like this gun WAY TOO MUCH to deal with having issues with it. Read a lot of great reviews about this gun and I am hoping I don't have a bad one. Should I be contacting Ruger about these issues?
I appreciate any and all feedback, I really do.

I searched a bit and found a couple other people having issues the same as the second one I posted. I apologize for bringing up the same issue again, but I am still curious if I should call Ruger about it since the spring seems to bow.

Odd thing about these guns...some seem to have issues and some seem to be fine...I have two SR9Cs and an SR40C and have not had any issues with either. I shoot WWB and Federal ammo purchased from Walmart. |

I had a few problems with mine during the break-in process but now it's all good. I gave mine a very good cleaning and lube before ever firing it for the first time and I had three stove pipes on the first outing and I'm asuming it was from limp wristing the gun. This gun has such a small amount of recoil it seems to be sensative to limp wristing, but after adjusting myself to the gun everything went fine. I was shooting federal AE 147g and shot 150 rounds the first outing with it, all the stove pipes were within the first 50 rounds. The gun has ran flawless ever since and I keep it clean and lubed. I have not had any problems breaking the gun down or putting it back together. In fact I removed the mag disconnect, all went well. I love this gun!

Did you pull the trigger after you racked the slide?

I would take it back to the range, if everything appears to be functioning. If it fires alright, I would not worry about it. These guns take a little break in period.(Approx. 200 rounds minimum) If you still do not like the spring appearance call Ruger and explain what happened and they will probably send you a new spring. Ruger may want to see the gun, though. If it fires on the range ok I would"t worry about it. You have had several guns so on the feeding part I would think that you are seating the rounds in the magazine after loading?
Good Luck and keep us informed.
Also welcome to Ruger Country.

On take down, you lock the slide back and push the pin through. Then "pull the trigger" and slide the slide forward and remove.

I had a few issues with my 9C but all has turned out great! My spring is slightly "bowed" too which I think is normal. My break in period was a little concerning. At first I shot 225 rounds with three light primer hits. Then 250 rounds with one light primer hit. Then 200 with no problems. Then 175 with one light hit. Yesterday 127 rounds no problem. I think using a very light coat of REAL gun oil (no synthetic stuff) on the stiker and in the channel fixed my light primer hits.

Revised
Are you suggesting pulling the trigger or just asking if it was done (as part of your attempt to diagnose the issue?)

I'm also having issues. I've had about 60 FTf out of 650 rounds and my trigger will not reset about 1 in 50 times. So I'm past the so called break in time. It's going back to ruger tomorrow.

That's really odd. I've got an SR9C with about 250 rounds through it and I've only had 2 double feeds and that's it. The gun has performed flawlessly other than that. I also never cleaned the striker channel, just a field strip cleaning, not detail strip.
Last night I took home a new SR9 to go with the SR9C and when I got them home, I completely detail stripped them both and cleaned out both striker channels and there was tons of grease in there. I'm pretty sure that both guns will perform flawlessly now. I use Rem 115gr FMJ crap for the range and have some 124gr JHP's for home defense.
I'd say that a really good detail strip is in order, and make sure that the ejector is good and cleaned and then a really really really small bit of oil on it.
I'm going to polish the feed ramp on both guns next cleaning to see if I can completely eliminate ANY double feeds.

I want to post some pictures just so you guys can see what I am talking about.
Here's a pic of where it gets caught up during take down.
This pic shows the bow I am talking about on the spring, although a bit hard to see.
And another picture of the spring off the rail, which isn't bent as much when there's no pressure on it. |
