Hey WolfePack:

There have been several recent threads speaking about stainless steel recoil rods for the SR40, including this one:

Ruger family range report

The forum search function can be your friend.

I put a stainless steel recoil rod/spring assembly in my SR40 last year. I think that the added weight help moderate the reported "snappy" recoil of the 40 S&W.

Enjoy your SR40!

Thanks Boomer1, I'm surely looking into getting one myself. Did you order it online? Do you have a link?

What are the guide rods made of for the SR9/SR40? I think SS guide rods look a lot better anyway. Stronger too.

The stock guide rod is made of plastic. They function fine but there are advantages to have a SS guide rod.

Hey WolfePack,

In the thread I mentioned above is a reply from Eric Galloway, the owner of Galloway Precision. I got mine from him. A great guy to deal with, good product, good service. I believe he is located in your neck of the woods, somewhere in the Carolinas.

I had him set me up with a stainless recoil rod and a new spring that approximated the factory spring. I saved the factory recoil assembly, with the thought that I would replace it should I ever need to send the pistol in to get Ruger warranty work. As I understand it, Ruger will replace any installed non-Ruger aftermarket parts with factory original, and could charge you for the parts.

Here is the link again:

I can't speak for a SS guide rod in a SR but I can tell you that in a Glock it's just a feel good product that has no mechanical advantage or improvement at all. The money is better spent on bullets.

Hey TMD,

Thanks for your personal opinion about Glocks. However, I have a different personal opinion about my SR40 and where I choose to spend my money.

You sound like someone who wasted money and is now defensive about. Oh and be it a Glock, M&P, XD, Ruger or any other polymer pistol their all basically the same. SS guide rods are available for all of them. The majority of owners of every brand who has tried them all say the same thing. "They don't help and they don't hurt".

Thanks Boomer. I had gone to this site about a week ago and set them an email, but no response yet. I'm sure they get alot of requests for SR parts. So your recoil spring setup was kind of a special deal or or they producing many of these for retail sale? I would like to get the same stock spring retention if possible. Is the retention different between the SR9 and SR40?

I don't care if plastic guide rods work great on Glocks. Who cares. I don't like their cheap plastic sights either. Sure, they do the job, but they're still plastic. A SS guide rod adds more weight to the front end that will soak up a little more recoil, and will ALWAYS be stronger than plastic. An old co-worker had an FNP-9, and his guide rod was made of aluminum. That spring chewed it up over time, and left ridges all over it. This was a common enough problem that FNH later started making FNP's with stainless steel guide rods. So there is something worth noting about them being better.

Sorry if I sound snippy, but if a member wants to upgrade his gun, it is NOT a waste of money. I hear all kinds of Glock owners bragging about how they can modify their Glocks with a ton of after-market upgrades. But I see a double standard when non-Glock owners want to upgrade their handguns, and it becomes "unnecessary" and a "waste of money"? WTH?!

WolfePack01, I hope you do get that SS guide rod, and please tell me what you think of it. It is the FIRST thing I want to do when I get my SR9 or SR40. I also want to get a spring for it as I don't want to break the factory rod to take the factory spring out. What are the spring numbers for them anyway?

He is a new father and is starting a new business, so I suspect he has a lot of irons in the fire. No, it wasn't a special deal, It was a combo deal that he was doing. Sorry, but I can't speak about the SR9.

Good luck!

Thanks RugerSR, when I get one I will certainly post about it. TMD and all involved, of course the SS guide rod is not "necessary". If it was Ruger would have made the change long ago. I'm sure out of the box my SR40 would last for years with no problems at all. For me it's just a peace of mind/personal preference thing. SS or plastic? Ehh, push comes to shove I'm goin SS. Also, that SS guide rod would look great next to my SS slide and barrel! :-)
