Ruger American Pistol 9mm Takedown Lever Issue

I was field stripping my Ruger American Pistol 9mm for some routine maintenance, as I've done many times in the past. When I went to reassemble the pistol, I noticed that the takedown lever was in a "middle" position, and will not allow me to put the slide assembly back on or rotate the lever (see attached picture).

Anyone know how to fix this item? I have no problem bringing it to a gunsmith or sending it to Ruger, but I would rather fix it if possible (of course).

Thanks!

If the takedown lever has come out a little from the frame, then to push it all the way back in you need to press forward a part in the fire control unit at the same time. There is a picture several pages down in this article:

and you cannot simply turn it to either the horizontal or vertical position? if it is not possible to turn it try taking it to a range or gun shop with a smith. it really should be something simple

Thanks a bunch! The solution posted by pjr49 and meester don solved it. Super easy, but I don't think I would have figured that out myself.
