Question SR9c guide rod/recoil spring issue.

My wife got her new SR9c today. As I typically do, I brought it home, took it down, thoroughly cleaned it, reassembled and repeated. Then again. Taking time to familiarize myself with every little piece and nuance.

I then repeated the the process, but had my wife do it. (And then again).

After all was said and done, I proceeded to rack the slide back and forth a few times to get some wear marks on the guides so I knew where to put a dab of grease. After about 10-15 cycles, I went to disassemble the weapon to look at the rail guides, but I couldn't get the slide to come off the end of the pistol.

I then tried to pull it back out of battery, but the slide wouldn't pull backwards either. Again, I slid the assembly forward, with a little more "umpf" and that's when I noticed the recoil spring and guide rod had "fallen" off it's seat on the bottom of the barrel, and was hung up. I snuck a thin screwdriver between the spring and pushed it down- the slide then moved forward off the pistol and the guide rod fell to the table.

I cleaned it again, removing all noticeable oil, reassembled, and racked the slide another dozen times. Again, after pulling the pin, dropping the slide release and gently persuading the slide forward, I noticed the spring was "hanging" below the barrel.

Trying to duplicate this, I've managed about 50% of the time to get this to happen just by manually moving the slide to and fro a dozen or so times.

Searching, I found another thread, sr9c help?, but there was no resolution suggested or reported. Has anyone else experienced this? Time to call Ruger, or perhaps take it to my local gunsmith and duplicate it there?

Yes, I just bought the gun 2 days ago and I have the same problem. The gun store owner had the snag happen while showing me how to field strip the gun. He suggested I put some rounds through the gun to work out any burrs, which I did. But, it still snags. I expect this may be a bad batch of recoil guide rod assemblies.

I've not had any problems at all with mine. Call Ruger customer support. They will tell you what you need to do.

Spoke with Ruger support and he gave me a tip that worked with my gun. When you are ready to remove the slide, pull the slide all the way to the back until it cannot go any farther, then it slides off as advertised.

Just received my SR9c 2 days ago. I have the exact same issue. Both when I asked the dealer to take it down for me to examine (before purchasing) and again when I took it home after the 10 day waiting period with 50 rounds through the range. I noticed this is happening because the guide rod bows just enough that if you pull the slide off slowly, the disc might slide off the barrel catch if your not careful. I plan to get the Galloway SR9c guide rods when they become available to prevent this in the future.

I just bought a sr9c last week and its is doing the same thing. I was able to get it off easily after racking the slide all the way back. took me a few minutes messing around with it. i don't guess it'll effect anything its just annoying.

Thumbs up

I have had my stainless SR9c for about a year. During that time, I have put about 2000 rounds downrange, with no problems or issues... nada...zilch... it just works.

YMMV,

I had the same "yikes" moment trying to break down my SR9c for the first time. Out of the 6 times or so since then its happened maybe once. I am also eagerly awaiting Eric's guide rod. Dont know if that'll cure the problem but I want one anyway!! No malfunctions in use though.

I had the same issue the first time I tried to reassemble the gun. I was able to strip and reassemble three times successfully after that, so I felt comfortable taking it to the range. I've put around 600 rounds through it since then, and have stripped/reassembled 3 times again with no problems.

I have not had any problems with my 9c, but what is this "Eric's guide rod"? I guess I will have to google it.

Nope, couldn't find it. What it is I can pretty much figure, but what is the significance? What will it do/not do?

Its the replacement guide rods from Eric Galloway's comapny, galloway precision. I have the SR40 replacement in place already. You can order a stainless steel guide rod with several choices of spring, factory tension or a couple above or below that setting depending on what want.

I have been very satisfied with the stainless steel guide rod/recoil spring assembly I picked up from Galloway Precision, for my SR40.

I am looking forward to Eric Galloway's release of his aftermarket guide rod/recoil springs assembly for the SR9c. If it is like the rest of his products, it will be a hit.

I have not had this issue with mySR9C. I did notice that the plate that contacts the barrel flexes way to much for my taste. I will be ordering Galloway Precision's stainless steel assembly when it is available. I have the Smooth It kit and the stainless assembly for my SR40.It is going in easily so far. I am doing it a little at a time(kids will only let you do so much at once before they want to "help". lol).Eric and his company are great. aif you don't get the answer you want from Ruger, I'm sure their assembly will fix the problem.Good luck,Chip I should add that regardless of this issue,I love the 9c. It is a great gun.

Had no issues with mine. Put about 600 rounds and not a problem as stated. Sounds like a bad batch from the factory. FWIW.
